Which Dr. to start with?

A little background...
I went off BCP the beginning of Sept and it took 48 days to get AF. I happened to have a regular gyn appt during my second cycle off BCP and when I told her how long it took to get AF the first cycle off she said to wait and see how long my second cycle was and if it was long again to come back to see her to discuss being put on clomid to help me ovulate. (I don't know if she was just assuming that I wasn't ovulating based on my 48 day cycle or if it is based on hormone tests i had when i was about 17.) Well, I didn't bother making that appt since i got my second AF after only 31 days. I figured that maybe she was wrong and that my cycles are just regulating. So I've been using OPK's since CD10 of this third cycle and I'm now on day 20 with no positive. I'm starting to get worried that maybe I'm really not ovulating and I don't want to wait and waste anymore months TTC on our own if it is just not gonna happen.

So that brings me to my question...do you think I should start out by seeing my regular gyn again or go straight to a RE? Is it bad to be prescribed clomid by a gyn, who won't monitor you as much as an RE? Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

OK, so is this your third cycle off of BCP???
It took me 3-5 months to be regulated off the pill. Honestly, I think your gyno completely jumped the gun with Clomid. I had called my gyno when I was two weeks late so like a 48 day cycle as well and this was my second month off the pill and he said if it doesn't regulate itself in the next three months then we have to talk...with it being your second or third cycle off the pill I think you still have to wait it out!!!!
Taking clomid so early seems a little too soon...that's just my opinion!!! Good luck with everything!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think you could most definately call your reg OBGYN since you never went back after your 2nd cycle. I am currently at 7 months off BCP & still I am not regular. It gets quite fustrating but I would go to the reg Dr first & then take it from there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks! I figured that might be the place to start, but wasn't sure if an RE might have more insight. I totally understand that I haven't been off BCP long enough to be regulated yet. I just want to have some grasp of my situation, and since i have some of the tell-tale signs of PCOS and my cycles were never regular before going on BCP.

Re: Which Dr. to start with?

If you don't need a referral to see an RE for your ins. company and you suspect something might be wrong, I would go see the RE. It can't hurt to have some tests done.
I never had regular periods before going on BCP either. When I came off I had 2 normal cycles and then they started getting longer and longer, by the time I was in my 5th cycle AF didn't come again. My ob told me it was normal, so I switched doctors.
My new doctor immediately suspected PCOS. She did a sono and bloodwork to confirm it. She put me on metformin for three months, and I still didn't get AF on my own, so she sent me off to an RE. She told me she could prescribe me clomid, but the RE would be able to monitor me better and do IUI if I needed.
I wish now I had started with the RE in the beginning, maybe I could have been pg by now, its over a year since I have been of BCP. I always was afraid because of the irregular periods I would have a problem getting pregnant. I should have trusted my gut and went to the RE back when AF didn't come.

If she did your bloodwork on cd 17 of a 48 days cycle than that would show you didn't ovulate because you didn't ovulate until cd30-something.
I went through the same thing. First you should start charting to see if /when you are ovulating. Then you can have your bloodtest re-done on the proper day, which is 7dpo.
Good luck!

Just to clarify, i had bloodwork done when I was 17 years old (not on CD17). I'm now 29. I originally had it done to test my thyroid and other hornomes because i had very bad acne and irregular periods so they suspected it was something hormonal. I really don't know what was discovered by the tests since they put me on BCP and my face cleared up so i didn't question it.

I guess I'll find out from my insurance if i need a referral for a RE and go from there. Thanks ladies!!!
