How often do you need to get new tires?
Just wondering what the usual "life" on tires is...
DH says 1-2yrs and it seems much to me- no?

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
It depends on how you drive, where you drive and how much you drive. I didn't put my first new set of tires on the truck until they had over 80,000 miles on them, and there was very little treadwear but they had cracking on the sidewalls - but I do almost all highway driving and don't brake hard.
The best way to check is to put a penny in the tread - if you can see all of lincolns head, you need new tires.

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
depends on the mileage. Check the treads and see if they look worn. Unless you drive ALOT, I would say 1-2 years is too much.

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
Its more about how many miles you drive rather than every year or two. I just put new tires on my car @42,000 miles - my car is 2 years old.

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
It depends on the mileage, and the type of tire. Average annual mileage is about 12k. Most tires last around 50k, give or take. Winter tires and sport tires last less. Some are rated for 80k.
Most tires have a depth indicator built in. There are pieces of rubber in the tread that are even with the rest of the tread when it gets to between 1/8 in and 1/16 in of tread left. You can tell the indicator because it looks out of place with the rest of the tread pattern.
The only way you need to replace every 1-2 years is if you are peeling out at every traffic light and smoking the tires.....

I am going with between 35k-45k...take it to the price club for a tire rotation. Maybe they can tell you if anything is wrong. its worse when you end up with a flat. been there done that!

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
many people don't rotate tires...if you don't rotate, you ruin the fronts which will lead you to buying a whole new set..
mileage is a good factor to look at but you just have to exam the tire to see how much of it you have left...
some guys last longer cause they are smaller, drive contastnly on different surfaces, brake harder, etc...

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
not only depends on mileage, but the type of tire too. Unless you do a ton of driving, my DH said on leases less than 3 years, new tires are rarely put on, if that helps you.

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
it doesn't go by years, it goes by mileage. IMO, every 40K miles, 50K tops.

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
I recently replaced two tires on my car at 32K. I rubbed against a curb with a grate and it blew and the other got a flat that couldn't fix..grrr..
went to Sears..Of course I have the Michelins which are ludicrous money.

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
i just bought new tires and they said they're good for 80,000 milies. that said, you should rotate them as the rear tires get more wear and tire than the front tires.
ETA go to costco... they were far less than other places. they also rotate them for you for free

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
DH said that my car wont pass inspection with the tires that are on them now...
Like I said the car is 2 yrs old with 27k- and Im def. not peeling out- I think he just like to blow money-
I guess if I take it to the mechanic for the inspection he'll tell me if I really need it????

Re: How often do you need to get new tires?
well my wife decided to leave this open in the browser, so I'll explain.
Her front tires have excessive wear on them. Possibly from a fault in the tire, lack of proper inflation regularly, or simply the disgusting condition of the roadways here.
Tell your friend [my wife] the photographer ;) to take a picture of them (with the wheel turned all the way out) and then you can agree with me on how it needs new tires.
The outside edge of the tread is smoother than my 2 year old sons naked bottom.

Her front tires have excessive wear on them. Possibly from a fault in the tire, or maybe just because I was lazy and didn't check for proper inflation regularly. And as well, it seems they were never rotated at service intervals.

I had this with my Nissan Murano. I know she has a Nissan too hmmmm makes you wonder if it's a Nissan thing. I know the average is 50k for tires but my fronts were almost like racing slicks after 24k!!
Oh and BTW we went to GoodYear to ask if if was faulty tires and they told us there was nothing they could do.

Yeah, a bad camber or toe-in pitch will smooth out the tires faster than sandpaper... Sounds like they may have too much positive camber, smoothing out the outer edge. Also, low tire pressure can effect part of the tread, and not the entire tread.
Once again, the man is correct!
