Suffolk radio listeners - 91.9 WSHR
I was in the cafeteria in my work building on friday, listening to "Rock around the clock" by Bill Haley and the Rockets (you know, the one that was in Happy Days) and I figured that it must be 101.1 WCBS we were listening to.
Then Welcome to the Jungle came on. And then Come on Eileen. I had to ask what station this was, with this weird mix of music. And I was told that it was 91.9 we were listening to.
So I turned it on in the car on the way home (lost the reception around the Jones Beach water tower) and found out that there were also no commercials.
You know who is running this station? The students of Sachem High School. They have a mound on the football field that they broadcast from.
That must be one big antenna. It's now in my presets.

That's so interesting. I may have to test it out on my commute into work next week.

Re: Suffolk radio listeners - 91.9 WSHR
My nephew wants to get involved with the radio station in his new school (not Sachem) and I figured it was some dinky thing that only people within 1 mile would be able to hear.
I was suprised to hear about Sachem, to say the least. I never had a radio station in high school!
I wonder how they get the rights to play all these songs? Or if the faculty even polices them for pirated music?

I went to Sachem and remember the kids in my grade that were running it never played good music. I guess they are changing up the playlist!! There was actually a little studio in the school.

When my oldest daughter was in Sachem, she was one of the DJs for that radio station. They played, mostly, older songs back then.

When I was commuting to Stony Brook, I found this station and I looooooove it. To this day, I try to get it when I'm on LI. I love when they play jazz.

I work at Sachem and the Radio Station is run by the students with a Radio Station Manager. The must follow FCC guidelines. You have to take the Broadcasting class to be able to be a Dj.
The kids and Faculty do a GREAT job. They just recently changed their format.

Way to go Sachem, that's our SD!!!!!! I have to remember to listen to it!!
I went to Brentwood HS, they also have a radio station. Same thing, regulated by the FCC with a station manager and they need a license to broadcast. It's an awesome experience, some of my friends did it. Their numbers are 88.1 WXBA.

That's awesome! I am going to have to program that in my car in the morning. Sounds like a good station.

Yeah, they were featured on the news a couple of years ago.
It's completely legit (no pirated music) and they are overseen by a faculty member.
They're pretty impressive.
