Re: Spin off from Van Halen Tix
I'm just a gigilo and everywhere i go go....David Lee Roth will always be the lead singer as far as I am concerned, lol. He was the original!!
Example:
Pink Floyd without Roger Walters...can anyone name the guy that sings with Gilmour now?? Maybe 1 person out of a million.

Re: Spin off from Van Halen Tix
Sammy Hagar - the music he wrote was far better than anything David Lee Roth wrote and performed.

Sammy!!! If not for the music, than for the tequila.
Hagar had way better lyrics and music than Roth. And I prefer his voice over Roth's screetch. Plus Roth is a washed up loser. W*T*F was he thinking with that radio show!?.

Re: Spin off from Van Halen Tix
There is nothing like classic DLR VanHalen but I do think talentwise Hagar is superior. I've seen them both in concert and they were both brilliant. As far as Gary Cherone-the music he made with Nuno Bettencourt in Extreme was phenominal but I don't think he fits in Van Halen.

DLR.
I have a coworker who always talks about the Gary Cherone error.

Re: Spin off from Van Halen Tix
I can't stand David Lee Roth as an individual, or a performer on his own. I think Sammy Hagar is a talented performer without being the showman that Roth is (and that is a good thing IMO).
However, growing up, the Van Halen songs I remember listening to were sung by Roth, and I did like them.
In other words, I really can't decide (or don't care that much?), but I will agree that the whole Gary Cherone thing was just wrong.
Edited to clarify.

Re: Spin off from Van Halen Tix
eta so in other words my thread is innocuous???
Actually, I was clarifying that Hagar not being as much of a showman as Roth was a good thing, not that I didn't care who headlined or would be better.
But, honestly, I don't think I do. I hope you're not offended.
I saw David Lee Roth in concert once, just because a friend had an extra ticket. I went outside to smoke, and someone said to me, "Isn't this awesome? We're gonna see Diamond Dave tonight!!"
I had no idea who he was talking about.

Re: Spin off from Van Halen Tix
I think they all had their pluses and minuses. DLR made the band famous. He was the epitome of the '80s. Way over the top, huge hair, very flamboyant, both dress, action and lyrics.
However, after the 80s left, DLR didn't move with the times. He was stuck in the 80s, and Sammy was much more appropriate. Much more mature persona, lyrics, singing ability, etc.
Gary Cherone was great in that he was able to do DLR songs, Hagar songs, and Cherone songs. Very talented singer. However, he had even more issues and baggage than the other two combined....
I like Gary the best as a pure singer, but since they have to bring their persona along with them, I think Hagar is the best overall package.
