What would YOU do?
So I've recently gotten into cake baking and decorating. I was on a chat board (not here) and someone mentioned that they were selling a bunch of pans (some wilton- some no name) and other stuff. I contacted her to find out how much she was looking to charge for them and she told me $250, plus shipping. I thought it was a great deal but out of my budget (I figured shipping would be a lot b/c pans are heavy). I spoke with my mom about how I wanted them and they were out of my range and she told me she'd contribute $ toward them. I wrote the seller back telling her that my mom agreed to help me out with this so I could get them and she then told me that she would include shipping in the original price that she quoted. I paid her the $250 via paypal and I got an email yesterday telling me that they had shipped and asking me to send her 1/2 of the shipping (she asked nicely) b/c they told her it would be $60 and it ended up costing $144.00. So, what would you do? I'm not exactly rolling in money right now but I do feel badly for her--- help me figure out what to do please.

Re: What would YOU do?
did you save the email where she agreed to include the shipping?
Unless you're worried about negative feedback, they are already shipped so technically you don't have to pay unless you want to be nice

Re: What would YOU do?
I know- I do have the email. I'm just a "nice person" (too nice most of the time- usually the one getting kicked around!) and I feel badly for her. It's not even an auction- so I don't know where she could give me a negative feedback. I'm just really torn.

Re: What would YOU do?
Why don't you figure out what you can reasonably send her, let's say 50 bucks or so, and send her that. At least it's a good faith gesture, but not out of your budget. I honestly don't know how they could tell her one price, then charge her another.

Re: What would YOU do?
it sounds SO shady. If she was told a set shipping price, then thats what it should be... it shouldnt have been changed on her, and she shouldnt change it on you. People onebay dont go back to the winning bidder and tell them, after they won, that they need to forkover more $$$$. Something just sounds really fishy to me.

That's what I was thinking of doing. Part of me just feels like she should've gotten her costs finalized BEFORE getting back to me.

See, I agree with your response also... which is what's holding me back from sending her any $... I don't know what the best decision is

Re: What would YOU do?
$144 for shipping???? Even for something VERY heavy that seems very overpriced. Was it overnighted or something?

Actually, it could cost that much. UPS and USPS both charge surcharges if packages are over a certain weight or size. For example - if the box weighs 70 pounds or has a dimensional weight (LxWxH) greater than 130 inches there are extra charges and it could easily cost $200 or more to ship. If it's coming from another country, it could also be very expensive. My sister just sent a wedding gift to her friends that weighed three pounds to Finland and the cheapest price we could find was $70.
To answer the original question - obviously she is sending you a ton of stuff. I would try to split it with her OR send her what you can with an explanation that you weren't planning on spending that much $$$$.
Enjoy!!! You must be getting a ton of good baking items!

Re: What would YOU do?
Honestly I would feel bad too but I would wait until I get the package. It should say on there how much she paid for shipping and then I would send her half, if it is that much or what you can afford. If it doesn't have the price on it like FEDEX then after I received it I would call them with all the information, her address to yours and weight and get a quote from them.

Re: What would YOU do?
Something doesn't sound right. She says it was $144.00 for shipping. My daughter had a dresser shipped from Target and it cost her only $40.00. This was the heaviest thing I ever tried to lift. How is the woman shipping these pans? This is far too much for shipping and I would question it before I sent any money, no matter how nicely she asked. On the other hand, since already included shipping in the price, you owe her nothing.

Re: What would YOU do?
Wait until the package arrives before making any decisions. Take a look at the shipping sticker to see if that's really what shipping cost.

She didn't just buy the stuff to sell it to you. She already owned it, which was money spent probably over years of accumulating it. Now she has $250 from you for baking items she had. That's more than enough to front her for shipping.

Re: What would YOU do?
I have a lot of wilton cake pans, and they are pretty light. Unless she is shipping you like 90 pans, I'd be pretty skeptical about it, wait for the pans to come and go to the PO and weigh it.

Re: What would YOU do?
I ship stuff all the time- and it can cost that much-
how was it sent? UPS? USPS, parcel post, priority?
where was it coming from?
how big is the box- any box over a certain size is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
and with the way the post office increased rates in May- it can cost me $20 to ship something light to CA- so $144 doesn't sound that nuts

Target is a major corporation and doesn't pay retail for shipping- most companies pay 50% or less of the retail that the average person is charged

I would ask her what the weight is and then calculate it on USPS or UPS.com.
unless these pans weigh a TON, that sounds outrageous!!!!!!!!

Re: What would YOU do?
Thanks ladies! At least I don't feel like I'm the only one feeling like I am if most of you were in my boat. There are a TON of pans (something like 80 or more) and other stuff as well. She actually took digital pics of the receipt from UPS (which is how she shipped it) and sent them to me. When I asked my mom she said she would wait until the package arrived as well before giving this woman any more money. So that's what I'll plan to do! Thanks again!

Re: What would YOU do?
80 pans would weight alot
I work in housewares and I have had to carry master cartons with 24 pans- factory packed- and they were HEAVY
I am sure she used bubble wrap- which will add bulk
if you do the math- it's less then $2 a pan- which is actally not that bad

i agree and if the amount isn't on the package then take it and weigh it and ask how much it would cost to ship. i would also feel bad about the shipping being more than the original, but i would give what you thought was fair.
