Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

talk to me about the roads. Are they a nightmare in the winter? I love this area and we saw some cute homes over the weekends, but I have been wondering about the roads in the inclemant weather. TIAChat Icon

I don't actually live there, but I used to work for SCOPE at the after school daycare when I was in college. Rocky Pt. is always the first district to close school because of the roads - if that's any indication.

I grew up in Miller Place, but my best friend lived in Sound Beach (1/2 of SB goes to MP and 1/2 goes to RP). And they weren't the best in the winter, but not the worst either.

I had a Plymouth Sundance as my first car and I could get her in the winter unless it was REALLY bad.

Thank youChat Icon

And thanks for the responses. I have AWD on my car and it's pretty good in the snow, but I work for a school that hardly ever closes, so I guess it's just another thing to think about.

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

my sister has lived in sound beach for a few years now... she drives an altima and works at a job that doesn't close due to any kind of weather, or any reason for that matter - and she never seems to have much of a problem with the roads.

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

I love SB!

The roads look much worse then they actually are - I was also concerned when we started looking around here.

I've never even seen anyone struggling with the hills around here in winter, and I've never heard anyone that lives here complain about them.

IMO - I'll brave the roads for a great SD for relatively low taxes.

We really like the area. Good luck with your search.

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

Yes - the taxes are a bonus for this SD. We like the North shore. Plus seems to be growing into a young community because its one of the last affordable places on LI. We also like the fact that it's not overly crowded. There is still space out here. And IMO you get a bit more for the $ IF you are willing to live this far east.

Just as a side point of interest:
I was BSing with my neighbor - he told me that most of the houses were summer cottages. Years ago, these plots of land were given away for free with a newspaper subscription (in SB) or you got the plot of land for free if you opened an account at a certain bank (in RP). I dont know if thats true or not, but my neighbor seemed pretty confident.

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

I went to Rocky Point, my parents live in Miller Place on the RP border. There are some areas that are not that hilly. It can get a bit difficult in the snow - I only had a problem once - but the SD is aware and closes if there are any problems for the buses. Also, some of the more hilly areas are served by mini busses.

FM me if you want more info.

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

Rocky Point and Sound Beach are both great areas/communities but they do often have school closings when the roads are bad. I teach with a guy that lives there and his kids often have off from school. Closing school during bad snow is not a terrible thing, because sometimes it is better to close than people have trecherous conditions to get there. It is a great area and a great school district.

Miller Place is a great area! DH grew up there and we still have a lot of friends that live there. It is a great school district and a nice community. The taxes are a little high in many areas so I would just watch out for that. there isn't much business and industry in the area to lower the taxes.

Also, some of Sound Beach goes to Miller Place School and some Rocky Point. It just depends. My SIL's friend lives in Sound Beach and her kids go to Miller Place. Great area as well.

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

thanks everyone Chat Icon

we're currently port jeff renters, and are looking for our first place. We have a small budget, and are seriously looking at the west part of sound beach (in the miller place SD)... especially if we hit gold and find a place with low taxes...

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

I live in Rocky Point, and LOVE it. I drive through Sound Beach on my way to work in Port Jeff. I am a tax accountant so I HAVE to go to work no matter WHAT the weather. The roads (IMO) are extremely well tended with salt/sand and plowing. Additionally, you're never too far from 25A which is a main road and generally clear. If anyone has specific questions about RP or SB, feel free to FM me. We’re looking into doing an extension on our house rather than moving because we love it so much! It's quiet, we walk to a private beach, we have a lot of property, the roads are not super busy. We are not having children but I hear good things about the school district as well!

Re: Those of you who live in Rocky Pt./Sound Beach...

My sister lives in Rocky Point (she posts on parenting sometimes - michelle1123). My sister live on top of a big hill and claims to have no trouble with the roads... however I was taking care of her dog one winter while she was on vaca and I had a hard time driving my car up hill one night (ice). My tires were spinning. The next few times I used DH's car (Jeep liberty) and had no troubles. Then again, this could happen anywhere there is a hill. It is a nice town!

It is a really nice area! Matt and I where looking for houses in Rocky Point, but the commute is just to much for us. It has so many starter homes for reasonable prices. Good Luck!
