I'm so stupid -- please help me try to fix this

I fibbed on my resume -- said I had a LOWER title at my last job than I actually did. Don't ask why. I had my reasons and yes, I know it was stupid. Now this new place may call the old place to verify my employment and if they hear what my real title was, I know I'm gonna look shady.

So...do I come clean now and explain why I did what I did? Hope that they never ask my last job? Something else?

Please help!

It'll be fine. As long as your old job is giving you a good reference. and at least you didn't say you held a higher position than you did.

I also changed my job title to a lower title on my resume for a while - it was too difficult to explain the internal politics, etc.

send them an FYI email a fresh copy of the resume, with the new title. tell them you're consistently updating it, and wanted to make sure they had the latest copy

Well, you've already lied to them. If you bring it up out of nowhere, you'll destroy any credibility you may have had with them. So, I'd say don't bring it up unless they either ask you about it or tell you that they're not going to offer you the job because your references didn't check out.

Did you state your salary as the salary for the higher position or the lower position? Or, did you try to pass off the lower title with the higher salary?

Honesty. It's a good thing. Seriously. Consider it.

You said before in your other post that they were doing a background check and contacting your old employer. If they don't confirm that title then that'll be bad.

I agree with the other poster that maybe you can try to email them an updated resume.

I always thought that ones past employers are only required to provide that yes in fact your worked there and the dates and that information needs to come from HR not your previous manager. Now I am not sure if this is different company to company but I know that is how my company handles it and a few others that I have interacted with. This basically prevents the old company from being sued by the ex employee for defamation of character in case you don't get the job.
Personally, I do not think the title is an issue, it is not like you increased your position.

If you had inflated your title, I would be worried.

As it is now, if they get the exact title from your old company, you can always say that the title you gave is how you were referred to in the office.

"Oh, I guess I was *technically* the Senior Manager of Accounting, but I was always referred to as the Manager."

You could just tell them that even though they refer to that position as that title in the old company you felt that it was more in line (work wise) to the title that you placed on your resume.

If they bring it up, I would just blow it off and say "Oh I must have forgot t change it when I updated my resume last"

I dont thnik it will be an issue.

I woudn't worry about it too much. Some people are not into "titles" like other people are. Plus, each company may have different tasks and responsibilities for the same job title.
I would think that if you are qualified - you should do just fine!

I am pretty sure that all your previous employer can say is that you worked there- plus dates of employment- no other details per NY employment law. At least this is what was true when I worked in NY last.

This is what I would use. It maintains your credibility.
I am a recruiter and would not think twice about this answer since titles vary from company to company
