stupid question
how far along do you have to be to get the first sonogram? when do you find out the sex of the baby?

First sonos vary. I had one at my first appointment, which was like 6.5 weeks. It was too early to see much besides the yolk sac, so I went back at 8 weeks, then another at 12 weeks (the ultrascreen/NT sono). They usually do a Level II or Anatomy Scan sono at around 18-20 weeks, where they can determine baby's gender if he/she cooperates and you want to know.
ETA: With my Dr.'s office, the 20-week is the last sono you get unless you get a growth sono if you're measuring big or small, usually after week 30ish I think.

They tried to determine Taylor's sex at level II, the tech said she was pretty sure it was a girl, but not to paint the nursery pink yet.
When we went for the growth scan a few weeks later, the dr confirmed it was a girl!

same here, i also went for a 2nd sono at around 9 weeks but that was b/c they were monitering me b/c of low progesterine

For me, the first sono was 8 weeks, then we didnt' find out the sex...but that is normally around 20 weeks...we went at 19--the dr knows, but we dont know the sex.
