Central Air
Just wondering if anyone knows what the approx cost should be for central air in a cape? Any info would be appreciated. Any equipment and companies that we should use/shouldn't use. Thanks!

Im going off a friend who used to do this as his profession and normally the cost would start at around $5k and up.

DH does CAC jobs on the side and Capes are traditionally hard to do. So you may get some inflated estimates.
If you want, you can FM me with the estimates and I can ask DH if they are fair.

it depends - what kind of heating system does the house have? If it has forced air and all the duct work is in place then its not that expensive, but if it has baseboard or some other kind of heating, then all the ducts have to be put in and thats VERRY $$$

DH's cousin installed CAC in their expanded cape and it cost $10k, they used Slomins and were happy with them. You could find someone to do it for less but they preferred to go with a big company to be safe.

Yes, especially if they are not dormered. You mgiht not be able to get ductwork to all of the rooms downstairs.

Slomins was by far the MOST expensive quote we received last year... oh, and we were making it easier on them as most of the walls were open anyway in the house.
We wound up paying thousands less for in the wall ductwork (large colonial) from a CAC contractor that my main contractor used for his own house. We did get it installed off season (Dec) which will be cheaper and negotiated for cash which helped as well.

We had CAC installed in our hi-ranch last march. We already had the ductowrk in place because of our heating system. We did upgrade the furnace so that it could handle to cold air as well, and we paid close to $7000.

I just replaced my unit in my CH Colonial and added a UV light antibacterial unit. It was $6k to do that. They didn't have to open walls since the duct were already there. SO I am guessing 8k plus for you. Our company Service Now is fantastic. Its 4 brothers that run the company are good, honest people.

My contractor was National Air Conditioning.
The owner's name is Tom.
I asked DH this morning and he thinks we paid $6,700 cash (it may have been 7K). Considering we redid the entire house in 4 months all of the figures are a bit blurry right now unless I look them up. Again, we had it installed off season, ductwork in the walls of a large colonial. For the walls that they did have to open, they cut two maybe 1' x1' boxes in the walls (upstairs) so they could install each duct. We were having a spackler come in and do the entire house so the holes weren't an issue. 13 Seer unit but I think Federal regulations have now outdated that and you might have to go up to 15 Seer. I think we got it installed just before regulations were changing. I'm sure prices have gone up a bit because this was a little over a year ago.
All I know it was nowhere near 10K.
