So a little girl infected now could potentially have a greater chance of having a child with a birth defect. We just don't have the data/studies.

Man--that's not good.

Well if we don't have the studies, how do we know that is even possible?
That is like saying a little girl who had chickenpox has a greater chance of having birth defects in a child she bears in 20 years. There is no data or studies on that either.

I don't know--the link has been established here, and yet there's too much we don't know about duration. The WHO's extreme urgency in this case is troubling.

But for those of the population who are not in that demographic?

Because the more people that GET it, the more people that have it, means the more pregnant women that will get it. And for those women it will be DEVASTATING. That's a very big deal IMO.

I don't understand this - I thought it wasn't contagious (except maybe sexually) - so if you aren't actually bitten by a Zika mosquito, you can't get it from someone who was. Or am I wrong?

It's still not totally known, but there were some reports that it could be sexually transmitted or transmitted through saliva. And while we don't have the mosquitoes that are in the other countries that carry Zika in the US, we do have other types of mosquitoes that could carry it. So, if someone goes to Mexico, gets infected possible without knowing as many people don't exhibit any symptoms, comes back to the US and passes it to others either sexually or is bitten by a mosquito that is capable of carrying Zika, it could lead to people getting it here. It's not heavy mosquito season right now so it's not as much of a worry, and I think those mosquitoes are only in certain parts of the US right now, but it just means that it could spread locally, especially if saliva and sexual transmission are possible, and especially since most people won't exhibit symptoms so they won't know they are passing it on.

According to the CDC you are not wrong.
It is currently only via a mosquito bite and only via sex when via semen up to two weeks at this point past a bite. The sick themselves aren't really all that sick hence they didn't know they had it in the mojo juice. Not like you're dying of ebola and doing the deed if you will.

To date only 1 in 5 get sick and only for a week. The issue that is getting misinformation going haywire is the pregnancy risk. There's a possibility that it's linked to birth defects in Brazil but it's NOT PROVEN. They are monitoring it. Even so, there's NOT A SINGLE REPORT that gives ANY INDICATION AT ALL this long term and we need to worry about our daughters or our grand daughters or our future generations.

I'm not watching CNN or Fox or any of the media frenzy because they are pushing an agenda.

I'm sticking with viewing the CDC and WHO websites DIRECTLY.

BOTH the CDC and the WHO websites indicate it lasts 2-7 days with mild illness.

There is a casual relationship with Microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome which both need more research to be verified.

The particular bug that carries it is a weak flyer and can't fly more than 400 meters however it can travel by resting on humans, plants, etc and reproduce later.

It's been around since 2007 so they've had nearly 10yrs to look into this and still can't connect the dots. Mostly because no one is dying. The Brazilian birth defects are frightening people enough to bring attention to what was otherwise just a nuisance.

But the media here is making it way worse than what actual health specialists, scientists and doctors seem to be reporting.

Re: Zika Virus.. lets talk about it

I find it interesting that when there was that Ebola scare last year, so many people were dismissing and chastising the people who were fearful and who wanted people with Ebola to be quarantined. That was an extremely contagious virus that in many cases causes death.

Now we have Zika - which is not dangerous (except for pregnant women or women trying to become pregnant), is not even contagious through casual contact and even if you were to get it, would probably not kill you and may not even cause symptoms - and people are all freaking out and canceling travel plans.

I still don't get it.

But the more people who have it, the more mosquitos that will have it, get it, from biting infected people. So yes, the more people, the more mosquitos infected, the more infected mosquitos, the greater the spread.

I'm a bit concerned as we are ttc and have a big family trip planned in June to punta cana. But if we weren't trying and going to the area I wouldn't be concerned.

See--that's the thing. As scary and unknown as this virus and all of its effects are, the stuff we do and might to to get rid of mosquitos probably harm us more--but over time. I hate when they "spray." How many carcinogens are they spraying with?
