You just bought tears to my eyes. I know exactly what you mean. I have one daughter with coarse hair and one with mixed aka nice hair. People always comment about the youngest with the hair down her back and I can see my oldest who is 14 kinda looking like "Hey, what about me, is my hair not pretty ?". People comment about hair offhandedly without realizing how it affects the other person.

and that's exactly why Zendaya chose to wear dreads ( according to her statement) to show that there is nothing wrong with Black hair.

I do think, that if this was her everyday hairstyle, no one would have said anything. The hairstyle itself, was very pretty, with the angled part & the pieces pulled back in the front. If someone with straight hair wore it like that, it would have been fine.

It's just that she doesn't normally wear dreads & she was trying to make a statement & it elicited the opposite response, because Guilianna has a White perspective of what is pretty & glamorous.

To me saying the cOmment was stupid/hurtful etc is way diff from saying it was racist

Which is exactly what Zendaya released in her first response to Giulana, that it was hurtful and ignorant. She should have been called out and I'm glad she did.

But labeled a racist? And talks of her getting fired?

If a white dude said this offended him do you think E would have even cared

That was the media that spun it and started calling her racist and she should be fired.I never said she was racist. From the beginning I said the comment was ignorant and I agree with Zendaya's response. It was eloquently written and she never called her a racist. I agree with Zendaya's reaction, I think she should have been called out as its a very ignorant and offensive comment. That is my only point.

Eta: I don't know what the latter has to do with it. Im speaking from my view point and shared why I agree. It's hard to see it if you can't relate or not even willing to try to see it from another view point.

Is it more the oil or the weed part?

Bc Kathy said it first and get nobody saying nothing to her

Both comments were ignorant and offensive, idc who said what.

I don't know anything about patchouli oil but is it something if anyone who had dreds would use in their hair Regardless of race or ethnicity

Like if or example,I don't how else to compare if someone had a giant pouf. Hair and they said she smells of hairspray and mousse

Hope I'm making sense

Lol I get what you are saying. Like if someone had an 80's hair style and they said they probably smell like Aquanet.

However, the two are not the same because it's not a stereotype. I think what was said and the context of it all crossed the line from joke to offensive and ignorance. There's a lot of history behind it as pp mentioned.

. I don't think it is a white perspective that makes someone not like dreads. I'm white and I don't find them " pretty or glamorous " , but that's not because I'm white, it is because of my personal aesthetic sensibilities. There are other looks associated with minority groups that I think are quite beautiful. Again, not everything is about race.

I'm white and thought the dreads looked great. She looked beautiful. I understand that Guiliana should be held accountable for what comes out of her mouth (I really disliked the comment) but I don't think it was her opinion at all. The "joke" was written for her. She first said that the dreads "overwhelmed her" meaning it was a lot of hair for her frame. I'd venture to guess that was Guiliana's true opinion and the next comment was a lame attempt by writers/producers of the show to be funny Joan Rivers style. But of course it wasn't funny. I think it was a horrible message to send out to girls everywhere.

I thought of this thread last night. I was eating dinner with a relative & his new girlfriend Nice girl. She had dreadlocks & I definitely thought "wow that makes her look like unshowered".

and for the record, that relative & his girlfriend are definitely into weed.

White girl, big into the hippy lifestyle.

and I think Zendaya's dreds weren't well done.
