Your DH and collecting sperm

DH and I are considering an IUI (actually we pretty much decided to do it) which would require him to "produce" which he is very hesitant about. {{Don't get me started on the crapload of stuff we women have to go through compared to guys to get pregnant-thats another post.}}

He wanted to know (if you're willing to share) how your DHs experiences were "producing". Mostly his idea of how its going to be is the scene from Road Trip!! Chat Icon
TIA!

Re: Your DH and collecting sperm

DH was hesitant at first but he knew he had to do it. I said the same exact thing you said, that we go through so much more and never get to O, so he had to suck it up.

The first time it took him awhile, like 30 mins or so, the lab tech actually came out and asked me if I wanted to "help" him out. Thankfully he came right out after that. He said it ook him long because the videos were not so good. Then the 2nd, 3rd & 4th time he was a pro, 10 mins tops. Lol!

Good luck!!Chat Icon

We always did collection at home for IUI's, which was more comfortable for DH. However, when we did IVF the sample was done at the hospital. GL!!!

Re: Your DH and collecting sperm

DH didnt care. For our IUI's we did it at home but since we are moving onto IVF I told him he needs to produce at the Drs office and he has zero issue with it.

Re: Your DH and collecting sperm

For testing and IUI's we did it at home.

For IVF- where you HAVE to do it there, He was done withing 10 minutes. I was so proud of himChat Icon.

He was afraid to use the DVDs because he thought the TV would be blasting when he turned it on. He propped up a magazine on the sink, not realizing it was an automatic faucet. The magazine fell in and got soakedChat Icon. But still- he managed 10 minutes!

For those that produced at home. Do you live close to the doctor's office? I think i read you need to bring it in within the hour?

Re: Your DH and collecting sperm

It was always collected home. And I always assisted doing.....Chat Icon ...Chat Icon ...Chat Icon

Him doing it himself would just take forever.....and since these things are time sensitive......I needed to do what I had to do.

I thought you couldn't assist that way, something in the saliva that harms the swimmers. Or at least that is what my doc told me. Hmm interesting. Chat Icon

He always produced at home and either dropped off an hour before my appointment, or I took it with me and waited for my appointment. He never complained about it but I could tell he was embarrassed and wanted me nowhere around. He didn't even want me to take the cup with me Chat Icon

Re: Your DH and collecting sperm

Ok, it's been a long time for me posting on here, and we are not TTC anymore, but I still lurk in here and pray for everyone and hope they are doing well.

Funny story about this "collecting" - one of the last IUI's I did at RS in Stonybrook- DH had to work and I was the first appointment - really early drop off - 8am or something like that. It was the winter- ice and snow on the ground. DH did his thing - gave me the sample - which the office told me I had to keep as close to body temperature as possible - and wrap it in aluminum foil. So I wrapped it up, stuck in between "the girls" in my sports bra, put on a few layers of clothes and my coat and headed out. That in itself is funny but it gets better..

Getting off Exit 62 from the LIE, a car spins out in front of me and goes off the road, but I kept plugging along, very slowly and carefully. But all I could think was:

Dear God, don't let me get in an accident become unconscious and let the EMT find the "collection" between my b00bs.

They say you're not "supposed" to. But the times that I have; the sample goes under a microscope where they always let me look; and there were still tons of them moving along.

Im sure some are killed during the process......but when there is a large amount; I really dont think it matters.

For both IUI and IVF he has to do it at home and he comes back. He is such a baby. I go To LIIVF and they have no problem with him going home, no problem at all. In fact he just did this on Saturday.

For all of our IUI"s my DH just did it right at the office. I was always worried about getting it to the office in the amt of time and correct environment...He never had an issue with doing it there!

Re: Your DH and collecting sperm

We did the "collecting" at home for all IUI's & IVF. We live about 15-20 minutes from the RE...

I tried to assist DH the first time we did an IUI & it didn't work out because it was just way too awkward. After that experience, DH would do the collecting while I went out & got some coffee and then one of us would drop it off
