DH and I are supposed to go to Bermuda tomorrow for our anniversary. It's the first time we will have gone away just the two of us since DD was born over 2 years ago. To say I was looking forward to this trip with him is an understatement.

DH has a pinched nerve and is literally not able to walk. He's been in so much pain and going back to the doctor and pt everyday the last week. He just called me at work and told me that he doesn't think he can go away. That he is in so much pain that he can't see sitting on a plane or can't imagine enjoying himself when he feels so terrible.

We can cancel our airfare for $200, but the hotel is non-refundable. DH and my entire family think I should go to Bermuda by myself. While in theory that sounds amazing and a much needed break, but on the other hand I think I would just be lonely and miserable spending a vacation by myself when I'm supposed to be with DH celebrating our anniversary.

So would you go by yourself or just eat the $3000 we would lose from the hotel???

Sorry this is so long!

I'm sorry! That really stinks.

I would not want to go alone. I mean I guess I don't mind going alone to relax, but not on a trip that I was looking forward to going on with DH for our anniversary.

HOWEVER- for $3K, that might change my mind. That is a LOT of money to lose.
I think I might suck it up and go alone.

You are in a shytty situation either way, so sorry this is happening.

That's what I was going to say.

Did you try contacting the hotel to explain the situation and see if they will allow you to reschedule the reservation for another time?

Definatly a crappy situation. I hope your DH feels better soon.

That is alot of money to just throw away. Is there a friend or family member that could go with you? Try calling the hotel and ask them if you can postpone the trip and not cancel it. Maybe they will let you do that.

So the only 2 people who I know that would be able to go away last minute are my sister and SIL. My sister has plans she can't cancel and doesn't really have the funds to buy a plane ticket last minute and my SIL is also celebrating her anniversary this weekend so can't go.

Everyone else I know has young children and wouldn't be able to just go away last minute. We did try calling the hotel and they said we can submit a doctor's note and it would take 6-8 weeks to determine if they will issue us a full or partial refund.

Here I was so worried about Hurricane Matthew...

Plus my IL's are here to watch DD and I don't want to spend an entire weekend with them!!!Chat Icon

I'm so conflicted....

Try to reschedule with the hotel.
You guys have a legitimate medical reason.
That and with a hurricane spinning in the Atlantic, it might work.

Hope your DH feels better.

Do you have dates down the line that will work for you to rebook? Even if you don't, call the hotel anyway. If the first person doesn't help, ask to escalate it to a supervisor or manager. You have a valid reason and although it says nonrefunable, you may get someone on the line who can assist you.

Good luck!

Instead of asking the hotel for a refund, can you contact them again and ask to reschedule? And as a PP mentioned, if the first person says no, ask to escalate it to a manager and explain why you just want to reschedule, not cancel

Definitely a crappy situation- can you reschedule? The airport may not even be open there to be honest. I know the Florida ones some are closing tonight.
And besides I would fight it if they give you a hard time- you can't control the weather!!!

I'm going to try to call the hotel again directly. Bermuda isn't under any hurricane or tropical storm warning at this point, but we would totally be willing to reschedule and not necessarily looking to get a refund. I'm hoping someone will understand the situation.

If it is a reputable hotel, they should let you reschedule. It isn't like you are looking for a refund.

I'm surprised they won't just charge you the deposit or 1 day.

If it came down to losing the total cost or going alone, I would probably just go by myself. Take a break!

The hurricane is not foretasted to be in Bermuda though.

I would still fight with them to reschedule and not lose the money.
That is BS for them to take $3k from you and I bet they can resell that room.
You will have a dr note too.
I'd fight it

How long is the plane ride?

Your DH is miserable and in pain but I'd think I'd rather be miserable and in pain in Bermuda vs at home given the 3K loss.

If the hotel won't budge, I'd try to convince him to go if the flight isn't too long.

You have to try and get a voucher to use for the hotel in the future. Use DHs medical records as proof-they have to honor this, even if you have to beg the CEO yourself. Not only would I not go because of the storm but I would hate to go by myself. J MO Chat Icon

If your sister's main reason for not going is the airfare, I'd offer to pay for her. It would be a free trip for her.

Maybe you should go by yourself. It may be a little lonely but I'd hate to lose that money.

This was my initial thought. Flight shouldn't be too long. I'd rather be in pain in Bermuda if he could have at least a little pain free time.

So we called the hotel and they were more than willing to work with us, but because we booked through American Airlines Vacations they had to approve the change and they are refusing to. DH spent an hour on the phone with them and even if we delayed our trip and it would cost less they said they couldn't change the reservation.

DH is more concerned about being in a foreign country and not being able to get medical care if the pain worsens or he gets worse. I've tried convincing him that the warm weather and relaxation will help to no avail Chat Icon

I'm waiting for him to come home from work and then we are figuring out what to do. I don't really want to go by myself, but I don't really want this whole trip to be a wash.

I should add that if it was just the flight I would totally pay for my sister to come with me, but she can't miss work tomorrow and is supposed to go away with her DH this weekend as well.
