WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
ok girls I need help with this one. Yesterday my Mom mentioned throwing me a little shower. I told her I don't know how people will react to that.
Here is why I think people will think I am being selfish by having one: -this is my 4th baby -all of my kids, including this one, are boys
This is her reason for me to have one - my last shower was in Oct. of 2000. I have since given away my baby stuff (but can try to borrow from people) and whatever I do have is 11+ years old and may not meet safety standards.
I do not want people to think bad of me or my family.
WWYD??

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
IMO--I would not do anything. But if it was insisted, maybe just have a little lunch gathering at home with my mom, MIL, sister, SIL's, and my very very best friends.
I agree that every baby should be celebrated in some way, but it isn't the responsibility of your family/friends to buy you all new things just because you're having another baby 12 years after your first. That is your choice and your responsibility.

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
Did you have showers for all of your other children?
I know of people who have had showers for 2-3 kids, and big ones at that. Not even just a sprinkle!
So I don't tihnk it is out of the norm these days for a lot of people.
That being said, I understand where you are coming from. My DD was born in 2005 and so she will be 6.5 years old when this new baby is born in March.
We did make a registry and I am not sure if anyone is planning a sprinkle or a shower at this point --- I'm already 32 weeks and no sign of one yet which is TOTALLY fine...
But I know that if a good friend of mine or my sister were having another child after a long period of time I would encourage them to register so that they could have a shower/sprinkle.
There is a lot that has changed in baby care since 2000, not to mention that a lot needs to be replaced. Any carseats would be expired and not safe to be used. Crib safety standards have changed since they. Lots of toys and products have been recalled, and there are many new recommendations such as no sleep positioners in the cribs. Not to mention all the cool newer gadgets that are out there like bumbo seats, swaddle mes, rock and play sleepers, etc.
So I say make a small registry of thinsg that you need replaced and newer items that you will need. See what happens.

I would make a registry of items you'll need - even if you don't have a sprinkle, people will still buy gifts and instead of clothing, they might want to buy an item so that will make it easier.

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
If that's what your family wants to do for you then that's great! There's nothing wrong with celebrating every baby! It doesn't mean you have to put a $500 stroller on a registry or that you expect others to provide you with necesseties. KWIM? I think the idea is showers/sprinkles are thrown for the expecting mommy/baby not asked for by them so I don't think it's fair to judge them on it. One of my friends' moms threw her a sprinkle for #3, she had NO idea about it and when I heard some of the comments I felt so bad, she was soooo surprised and her family was just excited to celebrate!

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
Everyone is different. I personally am not a fan of sprinkles. But that is just me. This is a fight i am currently having with my sister now, bc i do not want one.
But like someone else mentioned make a registry that way if someone wants to purchase something they have a list of some of the items you will need.

I personally wouldn't and if I did, I would ask my mom to make it small and casual lunch/brunch. Don't get me wrong, I think a 4th baby is excting and of course should be celebrated but more conservatively. Your close friends and family will probably bring you gifts anyway, sprinkle or no sprinkle.

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
I don't see anything wrong with it especially since its been a while since your last baby. I am trying conceive #5 and my last baby was almost 5 years ago. I only had a shower with my first and my teenage daughter wants me to have a sprinkle if I conceive. I see nothing wrong but I would only want close family and close friends. Nothing big just a luncheon and its optional about the gift.

I think you should have one ~ if your mom or friend wants to give you one let them! I gave my friend a sprinkle 2 1/2 years ago (she was on baby #3 and he first shower was like 7 years prior) Although I did surprise her ~ she was very surprised and so very happy! plus she barely had any or the baby stuff left she used them with the two other children.

I agree! We had one for my sister when she had her third baby. SHe had two girls before and had a boy this time. It had been 5 years since her first shower, and alot of her baby stuff was shot. My sister didn't even register, she just told a few of us what she needed. It was a super small party. Immediate family and friends.

Thanks everyone.
Just to be clear, I've only had one shower before my first was born, almost 12 years ago. I have since had 2 more kids and now this one.
I guess a small sprinkle would be okay.
Thanks again

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
Go for it Heather!
I found out through the grapevine (my DH can't keep a secret), that my mom and sisters are throwing a little GTG at their house for a sprinkle for me... after I made it blatantly clear I wanted nothing of the sort, in fact, I got most of what I needed second hand and I am very happy with my bargains. Plus, it's my 3rd and I feel totally awkward with asking people to come with gifts...
I did have my last child nearly 6 years ago. I did give EVERYTHING away. We literally had nothing when I found out I was pregnant (well, except we saved our drop side crib because we couldn't even give it away!).
I'm still up in the air. I can't stop them from throwing something.... But now that I know (and they don't know I know), I am going to put a few things on a registry and go from there.

ITA! I don't see any reason not to have a sprinkle...it's not like you just had a huge baby shower 2 years ago.

I agree with this... my MIL is talking about throwing us a sprinkle. While we have a registry (for us to keep track of what we need), we want the sprinkle to just be a celebration of the babies. As for the bigger baby supplies, we are taking whatever comes our way from family and friends and filling in the rest. We ask consider diapers/wipes/onesies but nothing crazy...

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
I know DHs family is not for having more than one shower. My family doesn't care either way. Well I know family members that have had more than one shower so I'm assuming they aren't against it. But I dont think I would have another one. But I plan on having my second soon after the first. 12 years is a long time. You definitely need new stuff. Like pp said, maybe just invite a small group of people.

I think it's fine to have a little sprinkle. You haven't had a shower in 12 years and all of the major things you might need probably aren't up to date with the safety standards.

Re: WWYD??? To have a "Sprinkle" or not
I think since your first shower was so long ago it is absolutely fine to have a sprinkle.
This is my third child. I had my first son almost five years ago. My mom wanted to throw me a sprinkle for my second, but since it was another boy, and only 2 years later I told her I didn't want one. If this one is a girl we will have a sprinkle but I only want people to bring ONE of their favorite little girl outfits.

I think its totally fine since you have no baby stuff and your last one was so long ago. We have sprinkles for moms having their second kid when their first was born a year earlier!

I agree.
I'm generally not a fan of sprinkles but, I feel that they are ok if there is a substantial age gap between kids - or if it's for a third kid where things need to be refreshed.
