wwyd- kids playing on your front lawn?
We moved here not long ago, the house is on a corner and the bus stop is on the side of the house. We live in a small district so there is one school K-2 and one 3-5. Both schools let out at the same time so the buses drop off about 10-15 minutes after each other.
Since a lot of parents around here have kids at both schools they end up waiting on the corner for both busses. The problem is when the first set of kids gets dropped off and they are waiting for the second, the kids are running wild outside and frequently playing on my lawn (while the parents sit in the car). Today there were three young boys fighting on my lawn (play fighting) and a couple of girls kicking around a soccer ball.
Aside from the fact that I think it's incredibly rude and horrific parenting to let your kids play on someone else's lawn w/o permission I am worried that should someone get hurt we would somehow be at fault.
Is there anything I can do about this w/o looking like the neighborhood witch, especially since we are new here? Or should I just suck it up since it's only a few minutes a day?

I'd get little signs that say "Please Keep Off Grass" and stick them in the perimeter of the lawn. If that doesn't work, I'd put in those little lawn stakes along the perimeter and rope it off.
My husband just put in new sod because a section of our lawn people walk over as a short cut to the front door, looked trampled.

I dont blame you one bit but I am quite sure the parents will not respond well to you putting out signs or asking them to get off, etc. You will definitely be seen as being difficult, in addition to the fact that you are new to the area. And sadly some people can be very spiteful and they can act up even worse to just be punks. Yes, even adults do things like this.
I believe if the parents actually cared, they would stop their kids from doing this on their own. But they sit in their cars or just stand and gab b/c its easy for them, they dont have to do any work. I find the parents are ruder than the kids these days.
But yeah, I dont blame you ONE BIT. I am not going to tell you what to do, just wanted to point out if you DO take some action, you need to look at what can come from it.

I would go out in my housecoat and rollers in my hair with the rolling pin and shake it at em at the same yelling "get off my lawn you crazy kids" .... 
sorry, I jest. Seriously, I'd try the signs first.

If it were warmer, I'd say to reset the timer on your sprinklers :) But I'd probably try the sign thing. Obviously the parents don't care, but it's worth a shot.

But if she is truly worried about someone getting injured, which she stated, then putting up signs or ropes could only lead to people tripping and greater risks of injuries on her property. So I dont think this is a good solution.

LOL - If all else fails, go with the sprinkler idea come warmer weather - for now I say go with the signs. If signs don't work then rope off the area - that don't work go with the hair rollers and house coat (don't forget the slippers and knee-hi's)....

My parents have a similar issue. My Mom has called the school on several occasions and spoken with the principal who has then spoken with the kids. I guess you could start there.

Thanks all! These are all great ideas! As much as I love the rollers, robe, and knee highs, armed with a bb gun idea, starting with the school might work. Less confrontational with the neighbors at least. If that fails I might try the signs without rope (so no one trips) and see how that goes.
Lesson learned for if I ever move- ask where the bus stop is! Do stops change year to year or will it always be like this?

If you can afford it, a fence is your BEST senario honestly. This way you dont have to speak to anyone and you protect your property, it's a win win. B/c once you put signs up or open your mouth...thats it. What is done is done and if things do not go well, you can wind up being MISERABLE when you have little recourse and little control every AM with this situation (almost year round). But I would not do a short fence as kids can use it as a hurdle or to sit on it.
I am not sure what your property size is but what about a 4 ft post and rail fence (PVC OR WOOD)? THey are boundary protector fences. Open and airy with a country feel, yet marking the boundaries and keeping people out in senarios such as yours.
There are a couple of corner properties by me that have either wood or white PVC post and rail fences (most have 2 rails ) and they look amazing. If you take notice a lot of corner properties do things like this, I am sure for similar reasons to yours.

So that's what I would do. For me, this would be the only good option that would allow my property to be secured and not have to deal with people.

this has happened to me at both my houses. I guess I like bus stops LOL, but at the first house when our sprinklers went in, the put little flags in the ground. The parents thought it was for fertilizer and would not let the kids go near the grass. so after that I just kept moving the flags...

This has probably been going on long before you moved in. Good fences make good neighbors - I think its your best option.

My parents lived on a busstop corner and they put up a split rail fence when they moved in.
It kept kids out of the yard but, they used the split rail fence as a balance beam - so the picket fence option might be better.

That's true.....I love the post and rail but now that I think about it, they may use it as a place to sit their rear ends on or do gymnastics on it. And their parents WONT stop them. So maybe 4 ft picket is the way to go. I would go with a straight picket, no scallops but I would need to see a house style to say for sure.

I dont blame you either. As a parents I allow my son to stand on the corner of the grass so hes not in the street, but he stands there and does not play. I wouldnt allow my child to play on someone elses lawn either.
If it were me I would put up an adorable little picket fence.

Maybe the previous owners didn't mind and always let the kids play on their lawn, but now that its your house you have every right to keep people off of it. I would go with the short fence idea. You could probably even do it yourself to save money rather than hiring a fence company. I think I've seen short fences at home depot and lowes.

As others have suggested, I would put up a fence. It seems like a costly investment, but you just moved in the house and will likely be there for a long time...and so will the bus stop.
