WWYD? Asking for baby gear back that you gave someone
Let's say someone had an unplanned pregnancy and you gave her an infant carseat with a base and a bassinet in excellent condition.
You gave it! It was free!
Now, you will need a bassinet now back. Either the one you gave or a new one.
The baby is still using it and you will wait for the baby to outgrow it.
I don't think the new mom would need it again soon for another one.
Would you ask for the bassinet back? After the baby outgrows it of course.
Is that completely tacky?
ETA: This is someone you work with. Not a complete stranger. But not a friend either.

I don't think it is tacky...but at the same time I would not complain about the condition it comes back in

What did you say when you gave it to her? Did you call it a gift or was she borrowing it?

That goes without saying about the condition.

She was PG and you told her that you had baby gear that were unsold. That you would give it to her if she wanted them. She did want them after seeing them and took them.

I would if they arent using it anymore. I would not however ask for them to purchase you a new one.

Just questioning why you'd need a bassinet!

Of course, I would never ask for her to purchase a new one. I am French but not that rude!
I could buy replacements for the fabric part if it needed to be replaced.

Re: WWYD? Asking for baby gear back that you gave someone
Here's my take - it sounds like the items were GIVEN, not borrowed. So being that you are not friends, it would be really awkward to ask for the items back. And worse to ask for a new item to be purchased in it's place.
That said, my friend gave me a couple of things when I had DS. I say "gave" but I took SUPER duper care of them and will be giving it back to her when the time for her #2 comes... haha unless my #2 comes first I honestly can't remember if she said she was LENDING it to me or GIVING it to me, but the way I see it, it was hers first and I would not want her to have to purchase something new just because she gave me the one she had, KWIM?
Were you the one that was given the item and now the coworker is asking for it back or for you to buy her new items? That's how I took your post, but could be wrong.

Re: WWYD? Asking for baby gear back that you gave someone
I would understand your asking for it back if you were PG but I would never ask her to buy you a new one. I don't think I would ask for it back if someone else (no matter how close to me was PG). I would also be prepared for her to say no. I gave someone my car seat and base and then needed it back b/c I was PG and the person refused. I would be prepared for that situation.

If you needed it, I see nothing wrong with asking for it back after she's done using it.
Just say "Is there any chance you still have & aren't using the bassinet?"
That being said, someone has my crib & if you want that - it's yours.

I gave her the items. I will NOT be asking her to purchase a new replacement for it. I gave it to her in excellent condition but it was used. I would take it back in the condition it is. I can buy replacements parts if the fabric is stained. I would not ask her to pay for those replacement parts or buying me a new bassinet. That would defeat the whole purpose to give it to her in the first place. She works 2 jobs and it was an unplanned pregnancy.
It would still be cheaper for me to buy replacement parts than buying a new one.

I still have DS' crib but it was recalled. I am waiting for the replacement parts. If that does not work, I may take you on your offer for the crib. But right now, I am hoping the crib we have will work.
Thanks Barb!

Honestly....If someone gave me a baby item b/c they didnt think they'd need it again..and then they suddenly found themselves in need of said item...I'd be happy for them and not offended at all that they were asking for it back...

In that case, just ask if she still has the bassinet since you will be needing it. If she says no or refuses, it is what it is. But since you helped her out, I don't know why she wouldn't give it back, KWIM? If/when my friend says she is expecting or needs/wants the swing she gave me, for example, I will happily hand it over. She did me a favor, why wouldn't I do as she asked? JMO.

Same here. I would be excited for them. My family and friends are always swapping stuff back and forth. Whoever needs it gets it and holds onto it until the next person needs it.

Re: WWYD? Asking for baby gear back that you gave someone
Silly question, but does she know that you are in a situation where you will be needing it again?
If not, maybe she will offer it back (that is what I would do if someone had given me something - actually I was in this situation and gave the stuff back) and you won't have to worry about asking for it.
