What is with these MILs? It's like their child gets married and they lose all common sense!!!!
I would tell her straight out, you do not tell my child to keep a secret and you may NOT give that gift! If my DH wouldnt say something then I sure as hell would.

I would be pissed. What's with mil's who are so desperate to be their grandkids "favorite" that they will step all over the parents and their wishes? The lying part is really awful. Why would she want to teach your child to lie to you? I would be so mad. I would definitely say something to her or have your DH do it. And make sure she understands that Santa will be bringing that present.

I would talk to DC and tell them that can't be, because Santa already has it on his list to deliver.
And speak to the family member and tell them they are NOT to buy the gift and do not ever tell DC to keep a secret from you.
I wouldn't be happy about any of it.
