WWYD?
DD is 6. She has 2 friends over today. One of them is over all the time and I know the mom well. The other one I don't know at all and this is the first time over my house.
The girls were all talking about crushes.... Typical little girl stuff. Then DD mentions 2 girls in the class and says they have a crush on each other. The other two kids jump in saying "Girls can't have crushes on each other! Girls can't be in love!" Now, DD has an aunt who is gay and also has a little friend who has 2 moms." DD didn't say anything. I reeeealllly wanted to go in there and say something along the lines of "Anyone can love each other," or something like that, but I know that for some families this is a touchy subject and I didn't want to overstep myself. However, I've been kicking myself ever since. I feel like I missed a teachable moment and also feel like I should have validated to my DD that love is love, regardless of gender.
How would you have handled this?

Re: WWYD?
I would have done nothing. IMO, that is a topic that should be handled by the parents when they feel their child is ready (even though I totally agree with you). My DC have a gay uncle and have known ever since day 1 what gay and lesbian were, bc I am OK with that. I think you did the "right" thing.
I wouldve spoken to DC AFTER the children left.

I wouldn't say anything while the two girls are there, but I'd have a talk with DD later and let her know exactly what you said about anyone can love anyone. Have her understand that just because she may know this is ok, not all children have learned this yet.

Re: WWYD?
I don't think it is your place to talk about sexual orientation with other children.
Plus they are only 6 years old.

I think its ok to talk to your DD after the friends leave. I would not, nor would I want my kids, to be discussing things like that with other parents. I fully support all lifestyles, but its something that should come from one's own parents.

I agree with this 100%
As far as saying something in front of the other girls, I wouldn't have for a few reasons. It might be a subject that just hasn't been approached by their own families (they are still young) and unless exposed to a situation they are only going to know what is mimiced.

I think you handled it correctly. I would mention the conversation to the other mom's and let them know you didn't say anything to any of the girls but that you plan on having a conversation with your own DD in private.

Re: WWYD?
That is definitely not something you should say to someone else's child... That is overstepping IMO. You don't know how that family feels not that subject. Of course in a perfect world, this wouldn't even be a topic of conversation
If your dd wants to discuss it with you, I'm sure she will... She might have thought nothing of it and you brining it up probably wouldn't help. I would let the issue be unless she confronted you about it. Then tell her what you told us.

WWYD?
Tough one. I would want my daughter to learn to stand up to the wrongness. I'd walk in and say hey ladies whats up type thing. But I would HOPE they'd say it again in front of me. Id say anyone can love anyone. PERIOD. Love is blind after all!
Just like mama loves AJ and we're both girls, etc. Some love differently but love is always love. Caring for someone deeply.
If I missed the chance or they didnt say it again in front of me, Id be sad. I wouldn't want her to think her silence was a way of either being ashamed of having an aunt who was gay OR that she was someone wrong for thinking differently.
Dear lord I'm in for so much trouble!!!
AJ's 4 and has already asked me about same sex marriages. Guess I have to keep with it.

Totally agree, especially with kids that age. If they were teens I would probably think differently.

Re: WWYD?
I wouldnt have said anything either. Its not your place to teach the other girls. Your DD obviously knows its ok, but who knows what other's teach their kids. Since they said 2 girls cant love each other it might be that thats what their parents taught them (sadly) or that its just not talked about in their home.

This. Views on sexual orientation often go hand in hand with a family's religious beliefs, it's a controversial subject to be sharing your views with to other people's 6 yr olds. I mean, my kids go to Catholic school, and while I am a very "socially liberal" practicing Catholic, lol, I can tell that some of the families we are friends with are NOT, kwim? I have casually mentioned to my 6 yr old that men can love men and women can love women and it's no big deal, but never had a "talk" with him about it. I would be mad as hell if one of his friends' parents imposed their contradictory views on him while on a playdate.
You did the right thing IMO.
