Tomorrow DH and I are going into the city to see Rock Of Ages. We are going for our 4 year wedding anniversary, which was in May, so my mom knew about this, and she agreed to babysit for him from 2pm until around midnight. She calls me this morning and I mention tomorrow, and she screams OMG I'm so sorry honey, your stepdad and I made plans, I forgot! They are not plans they can change, they are going to Atlantic City for the weekend. She is a super involved grandma, how she forgot about babysitting her grandson which she agreed to back in December when I brought the tickets is beyond me. But whatever, it is what it is. Now we are stuck- my inlaws, my bro and SIL, my sister, my SIL and her fiance, everyone is busy already. The only non family to ever watch him is my best friend and she is away this weekend. SO, which brings me to my point. My mom is a preschool teacher, and she said lots of the girls babysit. They are closed for the summer, but she called one of the girls and she said she would watch Jameson for me. She is 28, very responsibile, works in a preschool, has been since she was 18, etc. My only concern is we have never met her. If I had her come over today to meet us, would you allow her to come tomorrow? Or should I let my DH go to the show with one of his friends and stay home. DS is 15 months.
ETA: We leave for vacation Sunday, I so do not need this!!!

Re: WWYD
I'm pretty overprotective so I would probably stay home (sorry)
I know she comes recommended by your mom but I wouldn't be comfortable leaving someone I've never met with my child for that amount of time. Also, not sure where you live but going to the city is probably kinda far too. Not like you can rush home if needed

Re: WWYD
If your mom works with this girl, and is close enough with her that she called her out of the blue and asked her to help out, yes i would do it. If your mom trusts her, I'd go with it.

Re: WWYD
My sis in law uses a babysitter from her daughters pre-school all the time.
I say meet her and if you like her and feel comfortable, go to the show.
You mom knows her. She is a teacher so knows CPR etc. She might be a stranger to YOU, but your mom knows her.
I think its crazy for you to miss the show and a good night out. This woman is a professional, knows children, knows how to handle them, works professionally in child care, and your mom KNOWS her.
Meet the girl. If you are comfortable, GO to the show.

Thanks for your input ladies. My mom has known her for 10 years, a lot of the families in the preschool use her for babysitting. I called her and she is coming over today at 2. If we like her and DS seems comfortable with her, then we will have her come tomorrow. We live in Bayside so Manhattan is not super far if God forbid something happens.

Re: WWYD
I think it's fine to use her if you meet her today. Everyone needs to start somewhere with a babysitter. But to be honest, I would expect your mom to cancel her plans. She made a committment to you and I would be pissed that she put you in this position to either use a "stranger" or cancel a night that has been planned for 8 months.

I was annoyed at her. Still am actually. She did offer to cancel Atlantic City but I told her to go ahead. It probably isn't a popular opinion, but he is my kid, not hers. So while she did forget about a commitment she made to me, I should cancel my plans before she cancels hers because I am his mother. The sitter did come over today and stayed about an hour. We all liked her so she is coming over tomorrow and we are going to the show as planned. Thanks everyone for your opinions!!
