Please don't quote, I will most likely take down..

We rent, I actually like renting (no lectures about how I am throwing money away, I'm not, I'm paying to live some place and we simply do not make enough money to own right now). Our landlords would like us to leave because their son wants to live here.

Now, DH and I feel like we are at a crossroads. DH would like for us to move to my parent's house in Montauk so that we can save some money (initially his idea was to put it towards a down payment and it may be, but not yet).

Here is the issue: My parents, while they said we COULD do it, are not thrilled about the idea. We'd have to put all of our stuff in storage and DS, myself and our dog would live out there full time while DH would be working in Brooklyn and sleeping at his step mom's for his tours (5 days on, 2 days off, 5 days on, 3 days off).

I feel we should just move back to Staten Island. I feel like the summer really really will be ruined for all of us if we move out to Montauk. We spend a lot of time with my parents, but my DH has never lived with them...they don't (well my dad doesn't) love my dog...

I feel like since in the four months (we'd have be back on SI by September-ish b/c I should really be working by then) that we'd live there we wouldn't save enough for a down payment to buy, so it isn't worth itChat Icon

Kate...I would summer in Montauk...not question in my mind! It isn't as if your parents don't have somewhere else to go when it gets too much for them plus it will give you some time to save. If it doesn't work out...you just find a place to live sooner rather then later.

I would move to SI. The thought of having to move things twice is not appealing at all. It is hard moving with a toddler once, forget twice.

You don't need only the stress of having to move more than once BUT you also have to have your DH away from you constantly. that, in itself, is not fun. Chat Icon

If it was going to be fun and enjoyable for all I would say do it. But four months of not really. Yeah, not really what I'd want to do. Chat Icon

Yeah, but it is their house...and my sister lives with them in the city, so Montauk is where they go to get away from HER!Chat Icon

I say don't move to Montauk. Sounds like way more cons than pros and like you said the one pro (saving money) I don't think is worth what you will be going through (being away from DH, being unhappy, putting stuff in storage, DS missing his daddy, your parents not loving the idea, etc). Sounds like way too much stress on your family (meaning you, DH and C3). Chat Icon

Re: WWYD

If I were in your shoes, I would move to Staten Island. First of all, your mom is not thrilled and that can cause tension in the house. You also want your privacy and I'm sure your parents would want theirs too. I think moving to SI would be easier.

First of all, buying isn't the best thing for everyone and there definitely is a right time for buying. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Renting can be the right thing for people at certain times or all the time!

Second, as someone who has lived with family (supposedly to help out, and against my better judgement) and has been unbelievably miserable about it (I almost left my husband over this), listen to your gut. Better to be comfortable and save slowly than miserable. Plus moving twice in such a short amount of time is tough - and there's a price involved in moving twice and renting a storage unit.

One thing we did to save money faster is lived in a smaller place for a little while. Yes we were cramped, but it was only for a little while and so worth it.

Good luck!

Re: WWYD

Before you decide anything-- I would come up with an action plan and determine how you are going to save if you move in with your parents. Then determine realistically how much you can save. Weigh that against your goals of buying a house, and the living circumstances this summer.

Money is not always the ruler in these kinds of decisions.

We would probably *only* save about 10k from June-September (DH still has to commute and we'd have to pay storage fees, food at my parents and a few bills still)

We cannot afford to buy a house come September, DH's job is steady, but I need to go back to work around then. $10k is not enough for a down payment (hell, its not enough for closing costs!)

My DH always listens to "chatter" and people tell them how they got a house for xyz and their mortgage is less than what we pay in rent, blah, blah, blah.Chat Icon

Staying where we are isn't an option. We have to move no matter what.

If we find something similar on SI, paying what we do now, we'd probably save like $2k in that time frame...

But, we can't really save til I go back to work (I generally make more than DH) and DH can work OT, which won't happen til we move to back to SI...

My major point is that we will have this major upheaval 2x really, and still not be able to buy a house, KWIM?

Re: WWYD

I would NOT move to Montauk. I would move back to SI into a small place even if it were a one bedroom and save as much money as possible. You may save $$ on rent but the food shopping there is terribly expensive, gas is more than here, your DH's commuting costs and the time it takes to get out there especially in the summer is not worth it. My mom lives there year round and I don't even go out there to visit her in the summer b/c of all the traffic.

Sometimes sanity is more valuable than money..

sounds like moving to Montauk might let you save some more $$, but would cost you more in that you'd not see your DH as often as you'd like, your DC will not see his Dad, your parents are being put out, and you yourself sound like your not that keen on it.

Sounds like you'll be better off going to SI

Move to SI and save what you can $ wise, as well as your sanity

you know in your heart you will be happier. Montauk is FAR. winters out there are very boring. Plus, I'm not sure of your job situation but if you are looking for a job, how are you going to interview?

And if you change your mind and you want to buy, you can do it with 10K. you can do it with less. there are programs out there for no down payment, and no closing costs. FannieMay has one. there are requirements but since you have 1 salary right now, you could qualify. I know you said you don't want to buy but I just wanted to share that info with you in case you change your mind

Family is what life is about. There is no amount of money I could save that would be worth never seeing DH. Stick together & suck up the $$ loss that comes with it.

Put your stuff in storage, get rid of unnecessary stuff and summer it out in Montauk. Then, move to SI.

Re: WWYD

Tough call. The summer in Montauk is really tempting but sounds stressful and a PITA since you'd have to put everything in storage. Plus the fact that you would see DH less than you already do.

If SI is where you want to be (Boo, BTW Chat Icon ) then I would get a place there from the beginning. It will also be easier to interview from there than having to commute from Montauk.

Re: WWYD

I am leaning towards SI. You can get a nice place to rent, and still see DH all the time.

As for the $$, like you said, you won't be able to really save until you go back to work so I would rather be with my husband and wait a little longer. Chat Icon Chat Icon
