WWYD - Need Quick Advice on Long Weekend trip

DH and I booked a long weekend out at Montauk for this weekend.

We are supposed to leave at 3PM right after DC get out of school (3 & 5 years old)

We've gone the last 3 years in a row and the weather has been phenomenal.

This weekend looks cloudy with 20-25mph winds.

I'm worried about being stuck in a 1 bedroom hotel room with both kids and terrible weather.

The problem is we put down a $500 deposit that is now non-refundable. And while I would hate to lose the $500, if we go, we would have to pay the rest (another $500) and risk having a crappy time.

So, here are my options at this point. DH said he would do anything since it was my combined birthday/anniversary present.

1) Go, pay the rest of the $500 and try to make the best of the weekend

2) cancel, lose the $500 deposit, and stay home (and not risk losing $1000) if the kids end up stir crazy in Montauk

3) cancel (lose $500 deposit), book last minute to Vermont where DH's family will be going for Oktoberfest, pay additional $800. Kids are guaranteed to have fun with their cousins and built-in babysitting if DH want to go to dinner or do something by ourselves one night.

DH said not to worry about the $$ bc he wants us to enjoy the weekend but the thought of losing the deposit for options 1 & 2 makes me a little sick.

WWYD? I need to decide by 2PM so I can pack accordingly and be ready to go when the kids get back from school.

uuuggghh, why can't the weather just cooperate?

I would choose #3, but maybe bc Im not a big montauk person...if your main focus is keeping the kids happy, I would do this!

My main focus is keeping myself sane!Chat Icon

I'm really leaning towards 3 as well. The money thing is killing me though.

I wouldnt waste $500 and stick with Montauk. It is not going to rain all weekend and you can still make happy memories inside, tell ghost stories, have a day where everyone stays in their PJs and watches movies, etc.

True, but if we do go, I would have to spend another $500 to do essentially the same things we would do at home without the added comforts of being at home. Kids inside in a one-bedroom hotel is really, really tough.

So, it's lose $500 if we don't go, but lose $1000 if we do go, and risk not having a good time.

I choose #3.

Nothing will replace the memories your kids will make with their cousins. Some of my best memories growing up involved my cousins. Chat Icon

You would have to pay the $500 for Montauk if you went anyway. So I would just apply it to the $800 for VT.

I was just in VT over the weekend and it's gorgeous there right now. I would do that over Montuak in a heartbeat.

Vermont is technically only a $300.00 difference between Montauk....and you would have a better time, company, and a free babysitter...I'd do #3

I was just going to say this too! Vermont will end up costing 1300 vs Montauk 1000. I'd pay the extra 300 for a guaranteed good time with family and having the kids tired from playing with their cousins as opposed to cooped up in a hotel room : )

Enjoy your weekend and safe travels!!

Re: WWYD - Need Quick Advice on Long Weekend trip

Did you try to speak to them to see if maybe they will credit you the $500 towards another weekend? That way you dont lose it.

I wouldn't take $500 out of my wallet and throw it in the trash on a normal day, so I certainly wouldn't want to lose a deposit in that amount. I would go and make the best of it.

Re: WWYD - Need Quick Advice on Long Weekend trip

The $500 is a sunk cost, you can't make your decision based on it, because it's spent no matter what.

So it's $800 for Vermont or $500 for Montauk, you need to choose between.

I would opt for #3.

Re: WWYD - Need Quick Advice on Long Weekend trip

Thanks, guys. I decided on Vermont! It's supposed to be sunny and beautiful there this weekend!

My DC are super excited to see their cousins, so definitely the right choice!

And the Montauk hotel said they can apply the deposit towards another visit!

Even better!
