wow!
for the second time just now, somebody has told me that it's ok to drink alcohol in moderation (while pregnant)
Last week, two co-workers mentioned it while we were out at lunch. They tried convincing me to get some wine (they were all drinking)
And just now, a third coworker came and did the same thing! When i said "uh ... no!", he said that our parents all drank when they were pregnant and we turned out fine!
what the hell is wrong with people to try to push booze onto the preggo!!!

Re: wow!
actually, my OB told me that in the 3rd tri, ONE glass of wine per week is A OK!
oh and I had a glass of champagne at 20 weeks at 12am on new years eve with my first
its more a "general rule" because some women do not understand moderation.

Re: wow!
My OB says no amount of alcohol is considered safe. However once in a while for a special occasion is okay. I won't do it though. I'm too afraid.

Re: wow!
Like Maymama's ob, mine too said that in the 3rd trimester a glass here and there was fine. I personally never had a drop I was a very nervous pregnant woman

ditto here.
Regardless though, i'm not in my 3rd trimester yet (only 19 weeks) so even according to the "lenient" doctors, i'd still not be allowed any
Mostly, i got extra-mad because i felt like i had to say 'no' multiple times to each person. No means no people!

Re: wow!
I've heard mixed reviews from different dr.s about this. It's not really an issue for me because Im not a wine drinker or anything, more of like bunch of cocktails at social events. So I don't really feel the need or urge to have a sip here or there. The only alcohol I've had was a communion cups worth of wine at church at Christmas and Easter!
Like a PP said, "in moderation" would mean 10 different things if you asked 10 different people so to be safe they probably say none at all.

Re: wow!
My smartest cousin ( no lie) .... Her mother drank for the first 3 months of her pregency ... Mostly because she didn't know she was preggers .... I have heard other women say in their 3rd trimester one glass a day isn't so bad

Re: wow!
My Ob said a 1/2 glass every once in a blue moon is totally fine throughout the 2nd & 3rd tri. I am a HUGE lover of wine and have not had the slightest desire for a glass. Although, I am looking forward to sitting out on my back porch once the babes is here and having a glass. I think whatever you are comfortable w/is fine. If you do choose to drink, do it in moderation.

Re: wow!
the pregnant woman I work with (the crazy vegan who's having a water birth at home!)....told me she drinks every weekend!! And asked why I'm not doing the same since I'm in the 2nd trimester.....granted I think she has one glass at a time, but STILL. If she wants to take that chance, so be it, I wouldn't even think about it until the 3rd trimester, and even then it will be for special occasions only. FYI, she's 20 weeks along so I guess she plans on drinking throughout her pregnancy, to each their own I suppose

Re: wow!
I think any thing in moderation is fine. One glass of wine ( not a huge glass) is ok. Too much of anything is bad. In Europe it's probably more accepted. IMO if u want to that's fine. I have had some sips ( 3) and maybe would have had a glass if it didn't give me heart burn from te start

Re: wow!
Even if my Dr told me I could, I still wouldn't. I just couldn't let myself take the chance.
From week 10 to 20 (the 2nd quarter of the pregnancy) is the most vital to baby's brain development. This is when the brain cells migrate to their pre-determind position. If you were exposed to radiation during this time the cells would fall short of their destination and on the other side, alcohol can cause the cells to over-shoot their destination. This is where you run into FAS problems.
I know a girl who just had her baby 2 weeks early and he ended up in the NICU and needed blood transfusions and other interventions (she smoked, drank, got tattoos and piercings while she was pregnant).
For me, there is nothing I won't give up for 9 months to have a healthy baby. I love a beer on a Friday night, I'm a smoker and I was set to get a tattoo this spring. Those things can wait until 2013. They aren't that important.
