Would you leave your 4 y/o at a birthday party?

My mom brought my 4.5 year old to a birthday party today. It was a house party. I told my mom that she had to stay. This was our first house party for a classmate so I wasn't sure what to expect.

My mom told me that around 4 people left their kids unattended and gave their cell # to the hostess.

What is the norm? I thought 4 is a lot out of a group of around 10 kids.

I am pretty laid back, but would never leave my 4.5 year old.

I work a lot so I am really out of the loop, lol. :)

There's no way that I would leave my 4 yo at a party.

Here in NH its the norm. Im blown away cause I wont leave my 4 year old at someones house. In fact Ive been the only parent thats stayed at house parties and dont care lol

Ok, thanks! I was so shocked that my mom told me this! I don't think my son would be too happy if I left him with strangers either.

No, I would not leave my 4yo. My older DS is 6, will be 7 next month. I would drop him off. I stayed for all his kindergarten parties but it was a new school.

No, but I've had my DD invited to 2 parties where I was encouraged to drop her off. She's 4. Most parents dropped off.

DS at 5 gets invites that say "drop off". Most are at a party place though.

I decline if uncomfortable

I would NEVER drop her off if it was at a party place. At a house party if it was someone I was good friends with and trusted I would possibly drop her off, as long as there was no outside entertainment, swimming pools or any kind of potentially dangerous equipment involved lol.

On a side note-- we did attend a 4 year old birthday party a few months ago where one of the moms dropped off-- and I was shocked bc it was a classmate that she doesn't know very well. Ive also had moms drop of ftheir 3 year old for a play date when it was the first time they were at my house.. I thought that was INSANE!

If it was a house party I would have no trouble dropping off at 4. Depending on dds maturity and if it was a private party at a place and not open to the public I would probably drop off there as well

If it was a friend I knew well I would, but then I usually enjoy staying because I socialize with my mom friends. I do drop off playdates with those people though. If I didn't know them, a school invite, then no 1) I wouldn't be comfortable and 2) I would want to get to know the other moms. A party place as long as they are the only group there (gym, gymnastics, pottery type thing) is fine, but a bounce place or bowling where there is lots of kids would scare me.

No. My DD went to a party at our close friends house and I still stayed. A lot dropped off though.

My dd is 5 and I would NEVER EVER leave her at a party anywhere. I don't even leave her when she is at dance for 2 hours

No, not at 4, especially if I didn't know the parents well. And I wouldn't drop off at a party place until much older either.

And putting my crazy protectiveness aside for a moment, I don't think it's fair to the hostess.
What if all of the parents dropped off their 4 year olds?
So she is going to have to watch and look after 15 or 20 (not sure how many were invited) 4 year olds by herself?
I don't think that's right.

I wouldn't have left my 4 yr old at a party, ESPECIALLY in someone's house I don't know. I think that's too young for a drop off UNLESS I really know the family and we're friends. My DD didn't have her first drop off party until she was 7.

ETA - And to add, even now I don't feel comfortable leaving her alone at pool parties and even public party places. Some of those party places are insane and even the ones that are "private" I've seen kids wandering off and those in charge not noticing. I don't trust anyone who I don't know personally with my child so if I can stay, I do. The only drop off parties so far have been with people I'm friends with and know well and the party was in their home.

No way! There are only 2 families that we are very friendly with from the kids school. One of them we've become very close with the family so I would trust dropping them off at those two places. I've been to the houses, the moms and I are very similar as far as safety goes so I trust leaving them for parties and play dates. If I didn't know the person well, no way. 4 is just way too young to be left alone at a party either at someone's house or at a party place.

No - and I haven't seen others do it either. I was going to take my friend's 4 year old with me to a party this weekend (with my son) but, I was going to stay and be responsible for both of them.

Nope. And if I threw said party I would expect all the adults to stay.

They probably know each other/ are friends with the parents.
