Would you choose to induce?

Im 38wks 4days...the midwife said that since I have GD she would rather I not go past my due date due to high birth weight etc. but she said that was solely my decision. So, baby is measuring perfectly, not too big and my numbers have been fine. So, that being said, if you went past your due date and had GD would you wait it out or induce?

i personally don't support induction unless medically necessary since it leads to c-section a lot of the time. my cousin did get induced at 40w1d cause she was borderline high BP and had a textbook induction and vaginal delivery..
even seeing a very positive experience i still wouldn't do it unless it was 100% necessary. esp. if there is nothing going on with dilation or anything. in most cases (not all) when your body is ready, it will be ready. forcing it ready with drugs just leads to further interventions.

but it all depends on your personal level of comfort. if you do it you should be ok with the idea of having a c-section. also i wouldnt have a very rigid birth plan with an induction (or with any birth really ). just make sure you go into it OK with whatever gets you to your baby. keeping an open mind is very important.

I would have to say that I also do not agree with induction unless medically necessary. If it were me I would wait to see how things go. You still have a little time before you are past your due date. Wishing you the best with whatever you decide.

I don't see the point if the baby isn't measuring big. If the only reason is high birth weight yet the baby is measuring average, then there isn't really a reason.

For myself, I'm really hoping to avoid an induction since its my first and I'd like to avoid a really drawn out labor, a lot of interventions, and an increased risk of cs. So far one day past my due date, and my doctors are not suggesting an induction at all yet for all the reasons above.

Unless medically necessary and your baby is not huge, there isn't a reason to induce.
I was induced do to a medical condition and ended up with an almost emergency c/s.
Also, my son was born having difficulty breathing bc he wasn't really ready and still was full of fluid. It was very scary and he spent 4 days in the nicu attached to tubes. I'm glad my DS was okay, but sad that I never got to have the birth experience of being handed my son etc bc he was rushed off.

Crashing, but no way. One of my best friends from college had to be induced last month b/c of pre-e. The process took three (!) days, and that's not the longest one I've heard. Not all inductions end in c-sections, but many do, and those come with a list of potential issues. Unless there was a serious medical reason, IMO let nature do it's thing.

Having a large baby increases your risk of having a c-section too. When are they planning to induce?

I had an induction at 40+3. No medical reason other than my dr doesn't like pts to go too far past their EDD and I was DONE! It was very successful! 8h of labor and pushed for only 45mins!

I would not, but I would try alternative methods like acupuncture and /or castor oil

I had gd with my second child and they pushed me to induce because they thought he'd be big. It was the worst labor. So much worse than my first. I would never do it again unless the baby was in danger.

I would go as long as possible without inducing. As long as you and baby are healthy, there is no need to induce. Let baby cook until fully done and ready!

I wouldnt have a problem w it, but thats just based on my personal experience w my first. Dr told me if i didnt give birth theyd induce me at 40 weeks and i was totally fine w it...i couldnt wait to meet ! I was confident all the preparation i did, walking, swiming etc...would help me. I also had a doula who i adored hold my hand thru out it all...i had cervadil at 9pm, pitocin at 11am and was born at 3pm vaginally :) good luck w whatever you decide! ended up being an 8 and a half pound baby so she was pretty big!

It is a tough decision. I almost had no choice to induce or not. At my last appt. I was 39w6d and Thanksgiving was the next week. My dr. didnt want me to go too far past my dd and with the holiday around the corner induction would have been over a week past my due date if i didnt go on my own. I REALLY didn't want to be induced bc I wanted to go natural and wanted to stay home as long as possible. However, I begrudgingly made an appt. for a NST the day after my dd and most likely induction the same day. Well, thankfully god heard my prayers and I went into labor on my own on my dd. My delivery was everything I had hoped for. Just hang in there, you still have some time. This is the HARDEST part but you will get through and hopefully go on your own. My advice, get your walking shoes on!! I think that helped me a lot, I walked sooo much in the last couple weeks, even in labor! lol Good luck!

Everyone is different. When I was pregnant with my DD I asked this same question on here, minus the GD part, and I couldn't believe the overwhelming response to NOT induce. I trusted my doc 100% and went with it! I had a great experience, 7 hrs of labor and 45 min of pushing...vaginal delivery. I would do it again, on my docs recommendation. Good luck, and don't let everyones responses get to you...you do what you and your doc feel is right!

I did not have GD but wanted to share I had a great induction experience with my 1st. My dr. Doesn't let you go more than a week late so I was induced at 40w 6d. Everything went smoothly. I almost prefer that to my water breaking somewhere - I never even had to feel real labor pains bc I got my epi early. That being said I am asking to be induced this time around.
Do you have any progress? I was only 2cm but 80% effaced when I was induced. I think when being induced its important your cervix is already softening on its own...moreso than dilation bc the pitosin helps with that. I know people who had 2 rounds of cervadil (12 hr doses) & their cervix never softened so they ended with c-sections.

I wouldn't induce in your case. The baby seems like it is measuring fine.

I did not have GD but was induced due to lateness. My body wasn't ready so I had 2 rounds of cervadil before the pitocin. I got to 9 cm before needing an emergency C due to the baby's heart not tolerating the pitocin.

I know that a lot of people have successful inductions, but after my experience I would never advise to have one unless medically necessary for one reason or another.

Even with what I went through, I am still not sure. I didn't have a choice but to be induced. That's the way my dr. handles things with GD patients - they don't go past due date. This is because of potential risks to the baby's health from the mother's GD - I don't remember size being mentioned as a reason (they were estimating her at 7 1/2 lbs but she was born at 8lb 6oz).

I honestly can't tell you offhand what the risks are to the baby with GD, I don't remember. At the same time, however, I wish I didn't have to be induced bc my body (and the baby) were NOT ready. I progressed just fine with cytotec and pitocin, but pushed for 3 hours and had a c-section. She was face up, so I had back labor. Was her position a factor? Maybe. Will never know for sure. Would it have been different if I waited it out? Maybe. Again, we will never know.

My GD numbers were always excellent. Wasn't medicated for it. My advice to you is to research the risks associated with GD and going past your due date. Ask your doctor to explain those risks to you, too. Then make your decision on what you feel is best. Plenty of people have successful inductions, so try not to let that scare you too much.
