Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

DH and I are planning a trip to Disney. DS #1 will be 5 at the time and DS #2 will be 1.5 yrs old. DH wants to bring his mom with us. I LOVE my MIL but I feel like we will constantly be checking in with her for all our plans. I know she would be a huge help but part of me just wants it to be our family.

Anyone bring a grandparent and regret it? Anyone wish they had brough one?

We didn't with DS and I wish we did. Not so they could watch him but so they could experience his excitement with us.

They will be taking us all in 2012 and I am so happy!! They will get to see both their granddaughters see Disney and the amazement of it all.

I am so excited for them and us to share this memory.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

we just went to disney in december with our then 8 month olds.
took my mom with us and thank goodness we did!! she was a huge help to us. we paid for her trip in exchange for the help. she stayed back at the hotel a few times so we can go out ourselves. she left a day before we did and that last day was SO hard just DH and I . i don't think we could have handled it on our own the whole week.

granted i know it was a big gamble to bring her because i didn't know if she would be a PITA.. but we got lucky Chat Icon

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

I would NOT bring anyone. We went to Florida with my family in September and I hated it. It was all about everyone else (aka my sister and 12 year old niece) the whole time and never about my boys (3yrs and 6months.) I would never go away with them again. And even though I think DH's parents would be better because they would care more about our kids, I still like to keep my family vacations to just the people who live in my home.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

We went with our ILs this past October and honestly, having extra help at Disney was pretty nice! But I get what you're saying about family time.

But, it was great when there was a line, or when DH & I both wanted to take DS1 (2.5 at the time) on rides and DS2 (only 1) couldn't go. MIL would sit with DS2. And DH & I got to go on Space Mountain Chat Icon

I asked my mom to come but she has no desire to go to Disney Chat Icon My cousin is coming with us though - she is Elizabeth's Godmother. She is staying in our room with us which will be a PITA but it should be fun and DH and & I will have a date night and then one night her and I will go out.

I would. I think the help would be great and I know they would enjoy coming. I also get along great with my mother and MIL and know they wouldn't annoy me....too much Chat Icon

This too - DH & I spent the day at Epcot and night at a hotel on our own for our anniversary - kids were 15-minutes away with ILs for the night.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

We haven't gone yet, but all the grandparents have already invited themselves along when we do go!Chat Icon

My father was speaking to my mom about 'the next time we go to Disney' and my mom questioned him on when that would be. He said, "When the grandkids go.." My mom told him that he couldn't invite himself along on our family vacations.

When the conversation was being told to me, my MIL was there and said, "Oh, I planned on going too!"

Which is fine with us bc we've gone on family vacations before, and our parents are fun. I'm glad that they'll be able to see Disney through my kids eyes.Chat Icon

Honestly, I couldn't see going without my parents. But, we still do big family vacays with them... FIL and SMIL or MIL and SFIL.. now that's a whole different story. I would rather not go to Disney if I had to go with them.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

We just came back from our Disney trip a few days ago and my parents came with us. We only have one child but my parents really wanted to be there to experience the excitement with us. They were also very helpful in allowing us a night alone or even a little while alone to go on grown up rides and such.

It was a bit stressful at times because I wanted them to enjoy and not feel like they were "working" but overall it was nice to have them there. Personally, it was nice to have another female around so someone else could take DD to the bathroom sometimes! Chat Icon

Now had it been my MIL, I am not sure it would have been helpful.Chat Icon

We went with my dad last year and it was great. The extra set of hands was nice and he LOVED watching my kids see disney for the first time.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

We have gone by ourselves and gone with grandparents. It is a little annoying b/c we are very fly by our seat types in Disney and to have to check in with someone was annoying, but it was also a big help, especially getting on/off buses and in the airport.

We are taking both girls for the first time by ourselves in May and I know we'll be fine, but I'm dreading the airport/buses.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

I wouldnt be able to choose who can go and who cant go. If i invited my mom then I would have to invite my grandmother(they lvie together) then my sister and BIL would want to go and then my brother. Then DH would want to invite his parents, so they arent left out and then we will be pulled like 239423987 different ways. As much as I am sure they would want to experience DS's 1st Disney experience I dont think I can handle everyone pulling me different ways. i want to enjoy my vaca!

I went with my parents and it was the most awesome experience. I know that I could never do it with either of my in-laws.

I don't know why you'd need more than 2 adults to handle 2 children unless you wanted a date night without them. I wouldn't bring them.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

We are actually going next November for the first time. DD will be 4 and DS will be about 9 months. My dad and stepmom, who live down there, will be going with us. We don't get to see them enough and DD told Papa she wants to go see the princesses, so they offered to get the rooms and we are all going. I think it would be great to bring grandma, not only for the extra set of hands, but for the memories (hope thats not too sappy sounding!!) I think checking in on plans would be expected, since she would be there with you.

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

We were in California for a family wedding in May and we went to Disneyland one day. My parents and Aunt and Uncle came with us. It worked out well in our case because I like to go on big rollercoasters (and DH doesn't) so I had my dad to go on them with Chat Icon. It was also easier so DH and I could take DS1 on a lot of the "older" rides while DS2 was taken on the "littler" rides by my mom or aunt.
It was also nice to experience the parks and see my parents enjoying the time with my kids.Chat Icon

Re: Would you bring a grandparent to Disney for help with the kids?

When Ds was 22 months, we went with both my ILs. Had no issues, in fact we went back last month with them again!

It was actually nice to be with my ILs, because we were able to go on some bigger rides just me and DH, while they took DS on something smaller. Then they did stuff by themselves too that we werent interested in, and we were able to go to the hotel "bar" one night for drinks alone while DS was asleep!

I found it to be a really relaxing vacation having my Ils with us
