Would I be wrong if...

I stopped giving cereal to my 4 month old. I just started and so far it has not been a happy road for him. If you have read my previous post about his situation, you'll have a better understanding of what i've been talking about.

I want to wait maybe another week or 2 or even at 5 or 6 months. What do you ladies think?

Trust your mommy instincts!! Nothing wrong with holding off on cereal for a bit at all. Some babies don't even start until 6 months anyway.

Re: Would I be wrong if...

I've even narrowed it down to once a day because of the way DS has been doing since being on it.

I'm not even happy with that. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to starting DS on solids...Chat Icon

I agree trust your instincts

What does he seem to be having a problem with?
Ali hates cereal - I have been giving it to her for 2 months - and she is still cranky about taking it.
But when she does - she sleeps through the night - so we continue to give it to her.

He may not be ready. I started at 4 months. The Dr. recommended anywhere between 4-6 months .

If so I was very, very wrong since I didn't even attempt cereal until she was 6 months old!

I think there is no problem waiting.

Re: Would I be wrong if...

His problem seems to be gas. Every now and then he gets these episodes where he gets gas for a few days. He had it about 3 weeks ago then it got better and it seems that with the cereal it's started up again. I just think he has a weak digestive system. I gotta ask the doctor. He'll either suggest I wait a few more weeks, or until DS is 6 months. Or maybe he'll suggest a different type of cereal.

Last night DS wouldn't finish the rest of his 6oz. bottle. He had 5. This morning he was up at 4:30 and would not go back down. We had to give him a feeding at like 5:30 and at 6:30 he fell asleep until 9:30. Could that have been cuz he was hungry from having not finished his last bottle.

DH took it upon himself to prepare the bottle. Next time he'll have to CIO. I don't want him to think that 4:30 am is a feeding time. He ate during the day so it's not like he was starving.

Maybe I'll just try that. I'll also have to talk to the doctor about it.

If I understand you mean he had 5oz out of 6oz at his last bottle? One oz isn't going to make that much of a difference

I agree and that's why I was going to let him CIO but DH goes and gets a bottle cuz he can't stand to hear him cry. I'm telling DH tonight, no more bottles at that time because then it will become a habit. If it was 6am ok fine but not 4:30 am.

Sorry...but next time it's CIO

I am not sure if I am understanding - the baby woke up at 4:30 and your DH gave him a bottle, and he drank 5 oz?
If so, that means he is hungry. Ali does this occasionally - especially during her growth spurts. But correct me if I am not understanding.

Re: Would I be wrong if...

Hmm, he may just really be hungry at 4:30am, regardless of whether or not he finished his last bottle. I do not think an ounce would make any difference. My son is 6 mos and goes down at 7:30, wakes at 11pm to eat, and then again at 5am, and then sleeps until about 7:30 am. He wakes because he is hungry and needs to eat (even though he eats well during the day) and then goes back to sleep. IMO you may just have to roll with his schedule for a bit and feed him at that time. Sleeping through until 4:30 is pretty good for his age! Good luck!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

As for the cereal, I would definitely hold off if you don't think he is ready. You know best. Some babies dont' start solids as per their pediatricians until well after 6 mos and they are thriving.

No at the last feeding last night he only had 5oz. and would not take the rest of it.

This morning he was up at 4:30 and I was trying to get him to go back and at around 5ish he started crying hard and DH goes and gets him a bottle. I was going to let him CIO. But then DH walks in with a bottle cuz he couldn't stand to hear him cry.

He did take 6oz.

I don't think at 4 months you should let him CIO...especially if he took 5oz's at his morning feeding...he was obviously hungry.

Re: Would I be wrong if...

And remeber, when you start cereal they aren't going to continue to finish every ounce in the bottle since their tummies are fuller.

He normally doesn't get up for a feeding at 4:30. Oh god I fear he may start doing this more often now...

That last feeding he had was not with cereal.

Something that I was so looking forward to has turned into such a nightmare.

There is nothing wrong with stopping cereal. Alot of babies don't start solids until after 6 months. I would go with your gut.

Trust your mommy instincts, and you esp dont want him cranky and out of sorts for his big day this weekend Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Do it at your own pace and at MAtthew's pace. as you see him adjust to it, you follow his lead.
and pleease understand that its normal for them to not love it at first, so dont feel that youre doing anything wrong or that he's hating it and will never like it.
