Worried about the future for my girls...
I work in a middle school and today is career day, so the students were asked to dress professionally. The boys look great, most of them weaking a shirt and tie. But the girls... Most of them have on tight, super short miniskirts and 6 inch heels. Their main focus is to attract the boys and its working. Being sexy is such a big dal for these girls, and they are only 12, 13, 14 years old. I just worry. My DD is 15 months and I have another DD on the way. I just hope that society starts to regress in terms of what is attractive and beautiful (as opposed to skanky) otherwise my daughters are really going to hate me when they enter teenage years and realize I wont put up with it.

Worried about the future for my girls...
Since today is Valentine's day, I went to my son's class to make crafts and all the kids were dressed appropriately. I would work on reinforcing proper dress and manners. Hopefully designers will make appropriate clothing. I have seen exactly what you meant at temple. The lack of clothing on some of the girls is appalling, but their moms don't dress any better and compete to wear microscopic clothing well past an age appropriate time.

You really can't change society's perception of women and girls. I feel bad that these girls need to dressed this way and their parents are okay with it. Then there's also peer pressure to dress a certain way, but there are ways to achieve a certain look without being vulgar and that's an art that a lot of women need to learn.
Baby girls idolize their mothers, imitate them and learn from them. I'm sure you girls will be fine..

OMG it is scary.
I see my 13 year old niece on FB and there is a lot of Bar and Bat Mitvah's that they are now attending.
They are dressed like hookers.
I am talking 6 inch heels- huge platforms, shoes you would see on a stripper pole.
Tight short dresses that are inches away from showing their ass and vag.
No joke.
I wonder who buys these shoes and dresses for them
I can't imagine buying stuff like that for my daughter.
These girls look at least 21 years old in these get ups.
They wear more make up than me.
It is sooo scary.

Ugh!! DD is only 9 months and I think about this all the time. I mean, the bottom line is that I will be buying her clothes at that age, and unless she's sneaking someone else's clothes (and then I'll kill her  ), she'll be in age appropriate clothing.

It really is so scary! I see how my 14yo nieces dress and it is honestly appalling. I know my DH will never allow our daughter out of the house looking like that when she's older

exactly. If the parents aren't saying, no you're too young for it then therein lies the problem.
ESPECIALLY at that age, because it's not like they're making their own money in order to buy the stuff themselves.

I agree, and Im sure that the administration is cringing, but unfortunately they would be sending home half the student body and it would cause major controversy.

Im trying to understand the mind of the mother who allows her daughter to walk out of the house like this. They :
a) Still view their 13 year old like a baby and think its cute that she is playing dress up?
b) Know that this is the "trend" and would never want to interfere with their daughters chance to be cool and popular. They hated high school and would not want their kids to go through the same thing?
c) The mom has no clue and the girl is changing her outfit when she gets to school?

My kids are nowhere near middle school, but I think b) comes closest to it. I think there's a degree of competitiveness, they want their kid to be the coolest and most popular. I think there's also a degree of living vicariously through your kid.
My daughter is going to hate me the first time she asks me for those hooker shoes

I know from talking to my SIL about it that she is all about option B above.
I feel like she is trying to live vicariously through her daughter.
Always saying how POPULAR she is etc
How all the kids are wearing it.
How you have to be "in"
Half the issues in these cases are with the PARENTS

I used to wear super short shorts and skirts throughout my teens and twenties. Then I started working and wore professional clothes. I still wore the short skirts and shorts when I was not working.
Then I became a mom.

Worried about the future for my girls...
As far as fashion goes kids wear what their parent let them so you have complete control over that.
And as for what fashion is out there...it goes in cycles. I remember late 70s and early 80s we had the shortest shorts. Then things went big and baggy. Things will cycle back around so I really wouldn't worry about it. We have a huge influence on how our kids turn out. I know we can't control everything but I am the person I am today thanks to my parents.

I wore the daisy dukes when I was 13. I don't necessarily think I was trying to be sexy (maybe when I was older I tried to be sexy.)
If I remember correctly, when I was 12, capri type pants were the trend so I wore longer shorts.
Point taken though.

When I was teaching, I will never forget the first day of school. This is 7th grade. I cannot tell you the number of thongs I saw that day. I was appalled and it seemed they pushed their pants down far enough so everyone could see their lacy thing. What the f is a seventh grader doing wearing a lace thong??? Someone bought the lace thing for them and I pray it wasn't their mother.

It's all about parenting IMO. I would NEVER, EVER let my teenage daughter walk out of the house looking like that. Can they change in the bathroom at school? Of course, but that is why the school administration should be on the phone with their parents asking them to bring a change of clothes or pick up their child. I see what these young girls are wearing nowadays and it is not ok!!
