Why is pregnancy 40 weeks if baby is full term at 37?

It's another one of those mysteries!
Kind of like- why do they count the 2 weeks AFTER your LMP where you were NOT pregnant- as part of your pregnancy?
That I NEVER understood!
By the time I conceived I was already 2 weeks pregnant? Why?

Before 37 weeks, they are premature. 40 is ideal, but 37 is "OK".

yeah I think it has to do with that they believe babies are fully developed at 37 weeks, but are typically not born until 40 weeks.

not sure, DS was born at 38 weeks and he was totally fine, just a little small. I was glad he didn't decide to hang around in there for another 2 weeks for no reason

Full term meaning all the organs are formed. Those last weeks are basically to gain weight.
Also, before sonos and the ability to pinpoint exact ovulation time, most due dates truly were just an estimate that could be "off" by a full week or more.
