Why are there no posts on anything going on in Wall Street?

Or am I not looking closely enough?

I am curious to hear your thoughts. I have become obsessed with this!

I had no idea about this until you just posted. But I don't think things will change anytime soonChat Icon
I am what you would call middle class and it's disappearing. I am fearful that in 5 years I won't be able to afford my house with price of everything rising, I admire what this group stands for and I think it's admirable that Russell Simmons is so involved

Here's a link for this who want to follow this story

I know they were going off on Twitter about this because it wasn't on the news.

What scares me most is that many of us in this area rely on 2 incomes to make ends meet.

We are ALL at risk of that changing if one of us were to lose our job.

And don't even get me started about the cost of health care!

Norton security blocks the website link as being potentially malicious. That's a red flag for me - be careful about viewing the site if you don't have virus protection. From what I've seen on the news a good portion of the protesters are clueless - not even sure why they are there. I saw several on-the-street interviews where the individual could not even answer simple questions. One guy quit his job so he could protest lack of available jobs. Another girl was asked if a CEO came down right now and offered her a job, would she take it. Her response was No Way! I've yet to see anything on the protests that indicate just what they want other than to create havoc. It seems to be a lot like the anarchists that protest the G8 events in Europe.

I posted something related here: We are the 99%

Whenever you have a protest you will have some people who protest just for the sake of protesting and others who are just 'joiners'. I understand what they want. I am a part of the former middle class.. now dipping my toes in the stream of poverty. It's sad and it's scary and something needs to be done..

Way too many protests and debates lately seem to have people like this picking up arms. I cannot stand listening to people spout off (mainly IRL)--whether I agree with them or not--about things that they fundamentally do not understand. It just gets under my skin. I can listen to an educated person talk about just about anything--whether I agree or not.

Odd, my anti-virus had no problem.

I've been hearing about this for the past week. I agree with a PP who said some will join a protest for the sake of protesting. Others will be not as informed as they should. But the majority are informed, worried, and want to bring attention to state of affairs that most Americans are unaware of or just do not care about because it's "too hard" to understand (or too scary).

The curious can find more information on cnn.com or bbc.co.uk

I've had no issues either. I also agree with PPs about certain people who protest.

I'm interested too.

The protesters do seem unorganized, but their unifying theme is clear and it's one we all ought to be thinking more about: The unhealthy and growing divide between the haves and the have nots in this country. Those at the top - just 1% of the population - hold most of the wealth in America. That steep divide is negatively impacting our country, and will negatively affect our children's future if it isn't addressed.

It isn't only about the serious mortgage and banking problems of the past few years, though many of us on this forum experience the effects of those when we buy, sell, refinance or are foreclosed on. It's also the questionable practices by many other companies being traded on Wall Street and their growing disconnect from the real world.

For example, consider the Verizon strike in August. Just FIVE of Verizon's top executives were paid $258 million, which is far beyond their worth by any stretch of the imagination, yet ordinary Verizon workers were told it was suddenly necessary for them to pay $6000 of their hard earned salaries into health care if they wanted to keep it. You bet those workers were mad. Imagine if you were told YOUR income was about to drop $6000 when you knew five fat cats at the top were happily giving themselves an average of $50 million each? (I don't work for Verizon.)

No other country pays such humongous amounts to its top executives as many American executives get paid. It's crazy.

Multiply that by the thousands of companies represented on the ticker in the stock exchange and it's easy to understand why people are gathering to protest Wall Street's excesses and to call for more corporate regulation. Who knows, maybe it will eventually force Washington into doing something. It's certainly beginning to gather attention.

I would like to thank the protesters for all the money my husband and I are making for the overtime we work because they are there.

From what I have seen it is the same people that protest at every event and they hang out in union square. Also, they are protesting about other things besides wall street.

All I can say is that I have been around them for weeks and have worked in Manhattan for 11 years so I believe I have been educated enough to make those statements. I have spoke with numerous of them now and for the past 11 years and know how things go. I know people that have been sued by them for no reason including myself.

And if you have been there you will see that most people do not give a shi!!! about them and ignore them.

"Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. We are using the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic to achieve our ends and encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants."

It is unorganized because I feel at this point there is so much wrong why just focus on one issue - focus on many issues and so forth to show how things are not working and haven't been. I applaud those who go down and participate. I look at photographs and see various signs about jobs, stop hating unions, millionaire tax, social injustices, etc.

Re: Why are there no posts on anything going on in Wall Street?

as far as being sued (police) both sides are not perfect angels. I have seen it where a supervisor gets a can of mace out and just walk up to a woman and spray her for no reason (she was behind a barricade and standing not pushing) and yes there are protestors who are scum as well by verbally assaulting a cop and/or throwing garbage at them. Its never a clear black and white issue when it comes to demonstrating and the police.

See, that's where I disagree. That's where I think the protesters have gone really wrong, and look kind of silly. From what I've seen on the news, the people down there are protesting the unfair cushy treatment of the wealthy... and corporations... and the bank bailouts... and anti-union sentiment... and global warming.... and more.

All are interesting points, and each is surely important enough for a large-scale protest movement. But when you have thousands of people protesting so many different things, it... just seems like a mish-mosh of vented anger. I think they should pick an issue (and that We are the 99% is a great one) and stick with it. Inform the public about it. Approach leaders who are in a position to do something. But to go down there and say, "The bank bailouts were wrong! Oh, and the polar ice caps are melting!" - that seems like a recipe for nothing being done at all, and for any valid message to just get lost in the shuffle.

ITA!!! I am tired of the class warfare. Every person in this country has the opportunity to better themselves and pursue the American dream. Is it harder for some of course but it is not impossible to better yourself. I truly can not understand why people continually blame the rich for everything. 47% of the people in this country pay no taxes at all. And the top earners pay almost 70% of all taxes received by the government. Are people that envious of other's successes that they want to knock them down? Most of these CEO;'s worked hard to get where they are, maybe it isn't fair that GE wants to pay its CEO 10Million dollars a year, but they do and it is their right.

These protesters are young, socialists/communists in my opinion. It crakcs me up how they want to bring down Capitalism. We are one of the GREATEST Nations in the world people risk their lives and float in on rafts to try and come here and achieve the American Dream. Men sign up for our military, willingly to protect our freemdons. Do we need reforms? Yes! But to say we need to bring down Capitalism is absurd. We have a spending/fraud problem in this country not a tax revenue problem!

These protesters are burdening our police force and inconveniencing everyday people (closing down the Brooklyn bridge for example)

Why hate on people making top dollar because chances are the sacrificed and busted their asses to get there.

Instead if wandering the streets, these people should do the same.

As far as Verizon having tO pay 6 k a year for health, I have no sympathy. Dh pays over 800 a month and we have zero pension.
