Why are pregnant woment not supposed to have massages?
I know it is recommended that we not get massages during the first trimester. What is the reasoning? Is it ok to get a foot massage and/or a neck/back massage at the nail salon?
When are we allowed to have massages again?

there are certain muscles and particularly with "reflexology" that can cause contractions / early labor

How about a neck/shoulder massage? Will that be ok?

I've been getting 15 minute massages at the nail salon all the time. I think neck/shoulder is fine.
When I had my prenatal massage, he said it's spot in your feet that set it off.

Do you get 15minutes massages including feet?
I like to tack on a 20 minute massage when i get a mani/pedi (10m feet and 10m for neck/shoulders).

I think with the 1st trimester, it has something to do with the bloodflow. Many places won't see you during your 1st trimester (I believe it's higher risk of a miscarriage).
I had an AMAZING pre-natal massage at the Hershey Spa last month and it was exactly like anyother massage I've ever had except the don't massage your ankles, or the spot between your thumb and pointer finger as they are "trigger" spots that can bring on pre-term labor.

Re: Why are pregnant woment not supposed to have massages?
I got a massage during my first trimester and I plan on getting another one next weeks (I'll be 36 weeks then). My Dr said it's fine because for prenatal massages, they really only focus on your upper back and shoulders and neck.

Re: Why are pregnant woment not supposed to have massages?
If we are going with the "scare" theory of the points, it should added that there is a point on the shoulder also called GB21. There is also a point in the hand.
I feel this is the most misunderstood subject on pregnancy massage.
The MAIN reason people do not do massage in the 1st trimester is due to liability. There is a much higher risk of miscarriage in the 1st trimester and most places and LMTs do not want to be associated with the potential risk. That's the reason why! Fear of being blamed for a miscarriage.
I know some doctors roll their eyes when they are asked to sign waivers for their PG clients who are perfectly healthy with no high risk pregnancy so they can get a massage.
One thing is for sure if you have a PG massage, there is no abdomen massage at all in your 1st trimester. And of course, you do not rub the feet over and over in certain areas.
Also, if you are proned to morning sickness, you might feel a bit nauseous after a massage. It is up to the skill of the massage therapist to avoid rocking type movements.
As far as the nail salon. Please make sure the place is licenced to do ANY massage in the 1st place. A lot of places are not even licenced to do a 15 minute massage on your neck and shoulders.

You certainly can get a whole body massage. Even deep tissue if the LMTs is trained to do so with a PG client (not just the regular deep tissue on non PG clients).
