there is normally less pressure in prenatal and they are careful for you not to lay on your tummy.

most doctors will not suggest any type of massage until the second trimester. Almost all massage places won't take you in unless you are in your second trimester as well...

You need to wait until you are in your second trimester. I am sure you can use the gift certs for a pre-natal, as long as the spa offers one. You need to make sure that whoever is your therapist is trained in pre-natal massage.

From what I understand after having I think 7 massages while pregnant and talking to all the therapists, it's a myth and you can apply strong pressure on a pregnant woman-- it's really a matter of how you are laying, and the techniques they use-- ensuring that the baby is protected. My back is always in pain-- so I need them to work out whatever they can.

I just want to elaborate that you "can" get massages in your 1st trimester but most places will not do it mostly because it is a "fragile" time and the risk of miscarriages are higher in your 1st trimester. This is a question of liability. Also your hormones are completely off in the 1st trimester and it could make you "sicker" (morning sickness). Some places will even ask for a Dr's note. Not all places ask for it so ask each place you called what their policies are. If you are a high risk, talk to your Dr. first.

In term of pressure, deep tissue massages are a complete no-no. There is limited work on the ankle area and reflexology is contraindicated.

I am an LMT certificied in PG massage so you can ask me questions.

I tired to go to a spa in my first tri and they would not do anything except for a facial until the second tri.

Re: Massages at 8 weeks pregnant

I went to the spa for a massage not knowing we weren't supposed to in the first trimester. I told the therapist that I was early in my pregnancy and she gave me a very light massage. Personally I don't think it's a big deal. I've gotten massages/foot massages throughout my pregnancy.
