Why are people
always in such a rush to get somewhere in NYC?? I see people RUN from the Shuttle to the street or train. I've even seen people knock people over... it's RIDICULOUS!!

please tell me if you find out!! My mom and I went to a Broadway show on Saturdy afternoon. we walked from Penn to 42nd street - it was a gorgeous day for a walk. even on a Saturday people practically knock you over and run everywhere  is there something SO crucial that goes on everyday in NYC??

it's b/c most people that live/work in the city are trying to get from A to B....and I know it drives me NUTS when I see someone walking aimlessly through the streets when I am trying to get somewhere on time.
especially tourists who STOP in the middle of the sidwalk to GAWK at stuff.
have some common sense when you walk people...if you want to walk slow, don't do it down the main artery of the walk way...scootch over to the side and you won't get knocked down.
also, there are just so many people, if you are in a rush, there is never a clear path to get by.
I am sorry if it frustrating to you. it's frustrating to us speed demons too.

Even in my office, people tell me to walk slower...I can't!! I really just can't walk slowly. I do try to avoid knocking into people though.

Seriously, I walk 13 blocks to and from Penn Station every day. Usually, on my way home (after a 12+ hour workday), I'm rushing to catch the next train -- so I don't have to stand around and wait an extra 30-45 mins to get a train home.
I'm also trying to run around the smoker who is inevitably blowing their second hand smoke directly into my face behind them.
When I'm 3 blocks from Penn Station, it's BEYOND irritating to get stuck behind someone meandering through the sidewalk, stopping and blocking foot traffic in the middle of the sidewalk to take a picture of Macys or something equally less exciting.
I am happy so many tourists want to visit NYC, but some common sense and understanding is necessary. We need to make a living here and the commute is rough enough. I've NEVER shoved someone or knocked anyone over... but I get really annoyed when people wander around aimlessly, stopping randomly, and just generally blocking the foot traffic.

I rush because if I miss my train, I have to wait another 1/2 hour. Which means I get home much later & miss the bedtime story. That's enough to throw someone down the stairs in my book.

People walking slowly in the streets doen't bother me, but i am tempted to knock down anyone who stands on the left side of an escalator. Isnt' that side universally reserved for people who are going to walk up or down the escalator?????

Yes! And there is one in Grand Central that is too narrow for 2 people to fit down. It drives me nuts. The reason I am usually runing every where is that either the subway or the train was late/too slow & I have to hurry to catch the other one!

I totally hear where you are coming from re: tourists etc, but I don't think it's cool to purposely bump or push an elderly person, pregnant woman, mother with child, child etc. It's just uncalled for. If that's the case, then they should have "sides" for people to walk on because these same people that push don't stay to one side..they scatter all over so there is never a clear path to walk for anyone.

It is never ok to intentionally hit or knock someone over, but if I am walking fast to get somewhere and someone moves in front of me and I bump into them, so be it.
I can't tell you how many fights I've seen because of this...and it's all just so stupid to me.

I think London has this in their streets. I remember reading this a while ago....maybe it was somewhere else. But basically they have a "fast" lane....no daudling allowed!!

I think some people in NYC (and not tourists) are just mean, miserable beings and thats why they have no consideration for others. I can't tell you how many times people have bumped into me, walked right into me, etc etc...you just gotta go with the flow and accept it. Bc if you don't then you'll become one of them...miserable.
ETA: Don't get me wrong, I have told every single one of these blind a$$holes where to go...but in the end its not worth raising your blood pressure.

how many people do this? I mean really..I've seen people push others...but the conjured image here is of old people, women and children sprawled on the ground while we meanies bulldoze them out of our way.
It's a fast pace, and you do occasionally "brush" past others, but I think your description is a bit "much"
and again I say...it's like driving, if your going slow...get out of the left lane.

Yeah but being a regular commuter I see this everyday and it is kind of frustrating...but you do get used to it though...
ETA: My biggest pet peeve is the "ladies with the chip on their shoulder"...those b!tches could really just STFU once and for all when you accidentally bump into them.
