I would have offered to pay. And I never go to someone's house with my arms swinging. I would have brought wine at the very least and offered to pay.

Well I guess if you invited them you should have paid. However when I'm invited over for something like this I always offer to split the bill.

As for picking it up. Delivery all the wayChat Icon

who should have paid?

The person who hosts pays.

My SIL is notorious for "inviting" us over, ordering takeout of her choosing, and then requesting we pay for our meals. If we don't have enough cash, we get the honor of paying for everyone's food next time.
It might be one of the rudest things I've ever encountered.

I would expect to pay if I were hosting.

However if I were the one invited over....I always offer $

This is me exactly.
If i have people over I expect to pay. If people offer i do my best not to accept the money (sometimes people leave it for me to find later). When im at other ppls homes I tend to insist they take the money even though i always bring a wine or dessert. I cant help myself.
If everyone goes OUT to a restaurant it is always an equal split.

who should have paid?

I would expect to pay of I invited them. In my family its the rule to ring the doorbell with your elbows lol...showing up empty handed is a no no.

Re: who should have paid?

I guess I'm in the minority, but whether we go to someone's house and order out or they come to our place and we order out, in general we usually split the bill.

Re: who should have paid?

I think it's a matter of how the invite went out. If I said come over for dinner then regardless if I'm cooking or ordering I will pay. If I cooked I wouldn't expect them to offer to split my groceries.

Now if we were hanging out and we decided to order out, I would split it.

This is how it is for our friends and my family. Take out means splitting but it is what it is. We didn't even ask them for.money, was just surprised no one offered.

This too, I would never think to not offer to pay especially knowing ahead of time the menu was take out.

Re: who should have paid?

It depends.....

Girlfriends gtg, we usually all chip in for take-out (regardless of who is hosting).

Couples and I am hosting, I would pay (just as if I was cooking dinner).

Couples and I was guest, I would bring wine or dessert and also offer to chip in.

Re: who should have paid?

If I host I pay. If someone offers to bring something I usually take them up on it.

If I'm invited as a guest I always offer to bring something to contribute to the dinner (dessert, salad, wine, etc), but I'd be really put off if someone invited me over for dinner and when I got there they informed me of what I owed for my food.

However, we have certain close family and friends who we will get together with using similar wording as the OP's text and it is understood that we are splitting the bill, regardless of who's technically hosting.

See, I guess I don't look at it as "hosting". It's really not that formal. We're usually hanging out together and it just happens to be at my house. We split the bill. Just as when we hang out at their houses and get take out we split the bill. And the text would usually go like "hey what are you guys up to? Want to maybe come have a game night tonight and we can just order pizza?" And if we received that same invite we would assume we were splitting the cost of the food. And we'd probably bring beer/wine too since it's their house.

Yes. Wouldnt have even thought not to, since splitting is the norm when it comes to take out with everyone else in my life.

Exactly we thought of it as we are just using my house to all hang out. Plus we have people over almost every weekend. If I was expected to "host" we'd be broke.

Delivery is always over an hour so we always do pick up which is 10 minutes.

This is how it is with our friends too. We kind of rotate who is hosting among the two/three of us who have houses. Some of our friends have smaller apartments and don't ever host. We usually order pizza and everyone kicks in. Even when we BBQ, the host always provides the main food, but we all chip in by bringing chips and dip, beers, a salad, a dessert, etc... Maybe since we all get together so frequently, no one expects the host to cover all costs.
