Which would you prefer? (w/poll)

I was wondering what you would all prefer.

Would you prefer a house on the water and on a nice size lot (example 150 x 170) OR a house not on the water, with 1 or 2+ acres? and why?

(both actual houses would be the same)

Re: Which would you prefer? (w/poll)

I would go for the house on the water

Our take ( me and DH)- the amount of water front property is limited- and there for will hold it's value better if the marker dips or increase in value more over time

however- there are negatives like floods, flood insurance

Re: Which would you prefer? (w/poll)

Unless I could afford a gardener I am not sure I would want that much land to take care of. Since DH has horrible allergies, I don't like having him do the yardwork and I could not mow that much land myself. I am also really afraid that when we have kids they would go out into the water and g-d forbid drown. So, for me neither home would be attractive.Chat Icon Chat Icon

house NOT on the water. Salt water takes a toll on the house and your furnishings, I would rather have a bigger piece of property!

Re: Which would you prefer? (w/poll)

I have a waterfront home, and saltwater has done nothing to our furnishings, with our home, the thing that salt water does is make the need for a paint job on the outside sooner than later, but that's because we have cedar shake shingles (we may switch to vinal shake, to get the same desired look without the maintance).

We also don't have any flood insurance or have to worry about floods (we are on the North Shore, on a bluff). Lastly, I don't worry about children drowing because of the same reason stated earlier, we are high up on a bluff, and they way our bluff is...it's not a steep drop where if you feel you would plunge to your death...my husband actually walks on the bluff (very rarely, don't want to disturb the plantings), in order to do trimming.
We have roses and a lot of landscaping around the perimeter of our property, so it's not like kids will be standing on the edge of the property.

The only thing we have to worry about is a bulkhead, which we have...and every 30 years bulkheads need to be replaced...our bluff has a lot of vegitation, so we don't have an erosion problem either.

We were lucky, we have one acre of waterfront property.

It all depends on what you want. But don't think having a waterfront home absolutely means major damage to homes from salt water or high flood insurance, etc. (if you live on the south shore, I guess that is a reality, but if you choose certain areas on the North Shore, these things are not much of a concern).

Please feel free to FM me if anyone has any other questions about waterfront homes/property.

I would pick the larger land over the waterfront.

I think it really depends on each person. For me I LOOOVE the water, so I would want to be on the water, but some people dont love the water, so they should go for the bigger prorperty, its all about what is important to you

I chose on the water. I love just sitting outside and looking at the water - very relaxing and calming. Besides, I don't think we'd want to take care of one or two acres of property - too much work for us.

Re: Which would you prefer? (w/poll)

I'd only do waterfront on the N. Shore, I'm concerned about the flooding effects of a hurricane that is due to our area in the next few years or so.

I'd prefer a bigger yard for privacy and we are both into gardening but I could see how not everyone would want that.

I think it boils down to personal preferences and if it's what you want you shouldn't listen to anyone else.

Do you like the water? beach? have/want a boat?

Do you want a big yard? like to garden? Want more privacy?

I agree. Personally, I don't find much attractive about being near water (have no desire to go to a beach or go boating, etc) so I'd choose land. It all depends on the person and their own preferences.

Water water and water.

There is something so peaceful about coming home after a rough day at work - cracking open a beer and sitting on the deck.

Not that I would know ANYTHING about that -- but a girl can dream can't she?Chat Icon

I voted for bigger property -- I always lived in buidlings so wide open space sounds like a dream.

Not necessarily. (All things being equal, then yes, chances are the waterfront location will have more value, but a 1/4 acre waterfront may not have the same value as a 1-2 acre parcel somewhere else.)

We almost bought a house on the water in Centerport, but decided against it b/c the property was too small for our liking. We opted for an acre in the Huntington/Centerport area. The only way we'd buy a home on the water is if it had an acre+ of "useable" property and the surrounding homes were on similar parcels.

The one house (on the water) is in West Islip (Magoun Landing) and the other (larger land) is near me in Brookville.

I voted for on the water. We live on the water now, and I LOVE it! It is so nice to look out the window and see all of the wildlife, and our boat is right in the back yard.
