Which position would you accept?

1. Small start-up company that is growing, working AS THE director of your department.

2. Large well-known company, working UNDER the director of the department.

*almost the same salary and similar benefits

Re: Which position would you accept?

I'm a risk taker and I'm up for a challenge.

I would take the first position.

Re: Which position would you accept?

To be honest the responsibility factor would come into play for me & the timing.

Right now at this stage of my life I'd opt for #2.

A few years ago or a few years from now I'd go for #1.

How start up are they? Do you feel strongly that they have a good business model?

Back in the 90's I left a very secure company for an internet start-up that went under. So I'll never go to a start up again.

7 years ago DH went to a start up hedge fund and they've been doing really well, their newest fund alone has over a half a billion dollars under management within 2 months.

Re: Which position would you accept?

i would go for large well-known company, working under the director.

you will gain experience without being accountable if the company goes under

plus, you'll have a well-known name to put on your resume for the future

I agree.

Start up companies can go either way financially and in the end expect way more from their employees. It makes sense. They don't have the support staff a large company has so it's more of a "roll up your sleeves and get in the thick of things" kind of job.

Re: Which position would you accept?

I would go for the one where I felt I would have the most potential for personal growth and opportunities, i.e. where do I have the best opportunity to move up the ladder, receive promotions, etc. While the small start-up company is growing, will it also allow for personal growth and promotions? Will I have more opportunities to move up the ladder at a larger coporation?

I would also factor in how much stability you need right now, which varies depending on your personal situation. For example, if I was married with kids and have a mortgage, stability would be more important to me thatn if I was single and living alone.

I would also factor in my "feelings" on both places, i.e. the atmosphere, the people I would be working with and working for, etc.

Re: Which position would you accept?

It would depend on my current level of responsibility and savings. If I had a relatively cheap rent and some money stored I may take the risk at the start up. But if I had a mortgage or a little less of an emergency fund I would probably choose #2

Re: Which position would you accept?

When I was younger (and no kids), I was in a startup company. Pretty cool. Worked plenty of overtime, had stock options, nice office with a window.

Then the company got bought out, and we were all laid off, and the stock options weren't worth anything .... Chat Icon

Now I work for a large company that has been around for a long time, and will be around for a long time in the future. No window in my office, more structure, etc, but much more stable. I'm much happier that way now that I have 2 DC.

Re: Which position would you accept?

It depends on your position in life.

When I was engaged, I took a job with a law firm opening up a new office. I was a managing associate for a satellite office of a lawfirm. It has been amazing to have on my resume. The firm eventually closed the office, and I lost my job 3 years later- but in the meantime I was paid well and will forever have "managing associate" at 28 on my resume.

But as a mom, I don't know if I would take the risk.

It would depend on how much growth #1 offered. If there is no where to move after director, then I would go with #2 so you can move up eventually and make more $$$$.

Since I am young and don't plan on having kids soon, I would probably take the start-up job IF the company had a business plan that I was comfortable with. The experience would be priceless as well as having Director on my resume.

If stability is more important to you and DH, then job #2

Re: Which position would you accept?

#2

startups are risky and require alot of your personal time and energy. if your up for that and the place does well- than you'll most likely do better than the big comp job, but it's a risk. i'm not a risk taker when it comes to money.
