Where do you keep the Butter?

My DH grew up with it left out on the counter.

I grew up with it in the Refrigerator!

Who is correct?

everyone i know myself included leaves the butter in the fridge

I don't know that either one of you are wrong necessarily. We keep our butter in the fridge, but my mom keeps hers out on the counter. I don't know that either is right or wrong, but I feel like I use less butter when I keep it in the fridge b/c it's harder whereas when I use butter at my mom's house I feel like I use more.

My family always kept butter in the fridge but my roommates in college kept it in a cabinet which I thought was the strangest thing. I told DH about it and he said his sister and mother keep their butter in the cabinet too.

I grew up with the butter in the fridge, however I hate it when you want to spread it on something (like bread) and it is hard as a rock.
So when FH and I moved in together I bought this so I can keep the butter out but it stays fresh

I keep the butter in the fridge. U know ive never heard of keeping it out on the counter?!?!?!? Woah where am i living? LOL kinda makes sense though cuz its not hard when u want to use it!

Really? I have never heard of anyone leaving butter on the counter!! Won't it melt or go bad?

we keep it in the fridge.

I keep in it in the fridge, but my Grandma kept it onthe counter.

? Now I am really confused. I thought butter since it is a dairy product would go rancid if left out. How long can you leave butter out for before it turns? My butter is always in the fridge but it is the first thing I take out when preparing dinner so that it is soft when serving.

fridge. i never heard of it being unrefrigerated. it sure would be more convenient to spread room temp butter than the cold stiff butter though.

fridge - i have never seen anyone leave it out of the fridge. it's refrigerated at the supermarket - does that mean anything?

anytime i've left butter out like at a party it melts and i end up throwing it out
i'be never heard of leaving it on the counter

I store it in the fridge.. but I take it out and put it on the counter if I know I am going to use it. It's easier to bake with and to spread when it's soft. I've left it out for a few hours at a time - but once soft it never goes back in the fridge - it gets tossed if it isn't used. This means I try very hard to only take what I will use.

Just checked the carton in the freezer. It says keep refrigerated. That's what I do.

I never knew there was an alternative to keeping it in the fridge.

I found this online:

"To prevent a type of spoilage called rancidity, protect butter from heat, light and air. Rancid butter has an unpleasant taste and smell. To prevent rancidity, never store butter at room temperature. For ease in spreading, remove butter from the refrigerator 10 to 15 minutes before using it."
