100 times over YES. I hate when people don't, especially when it's sent by mail because otherwise you have no idea if it got there or not. My brother and his family never do and it's soooooooooo annoying.

Sorry, I think its silly a question. That's my opinion. My teachers taught me there are no stupid questions.
Did you really expect people to say no? Most people know that the RIGHT thing to do, when you receive a gift from anyone, in any way, is to thank them. Some people are insensitive or careless or thoughtless and don't say "thank you" for a gift. But I don't know how many people will admit its the proper thing to do.

I think that if it was a small gift an email thank you is fine.
In fact I think only party gifts (b-day parties, weddings, showers, etc) really require a handwritten thank you. It's nice for larger gifts too.

On a side note - my DH's family NEVER sends thank yous and I think it's so rude.
oh and I think email thank yous are OK but hand written ones are nicer.
