When to try for DC #2

DH and I are debating what kind if timeline would work best for our family to try for our next baby. I'm only 3 months pp so I really can't imagine being pregnant again and having another baby anytime soon but I figured I'd see how other people planned (or attempted to plan) their children.

Irish twins? 2 under 2? Four years apart so you only have 1 in daycare (and college!) at a time? Did finances play a factor? Emotional or physical readiness?

When to try for DC #2

My dd is 9.5m. We want another one and bc has been thrown out. We were contemplating 1 and done but we both want another. I'm 35 so I don't want to wait much longer. Finance wise it will be tight bc of daycare but we want dd to have a sibling if we can. Took me 18m with dd so we want to start ttc just in case with have problems like we did with her.

When to try for DC #2

I got pregnant again when DD was 9 months old. It was completely planned. We both want to have them while we're still young, plus I wanted their birthdays to be spread out(DD is in winter and this baby will be summer)

When to try for DC #2

DS will be 2 in April and we will be trying in the summer.
Emotionally I couldn't even fathom having another child until he was at least 1. I finally warmed up to the idea, and honestly I would wait even longer but I don't want them too far apart in age.

Re: When to try for DC #2

My 1st two boys were 14 months apart. There was some hard days, but I loved that we never left any phase and that they are best of friends. We just had ds#3 and he is 4 years younger than my 1st ( I had hoped a little closer together but not 3 under 3). It is nice to see the older ones interact with him and they are more independent but it makes it a little harder as baby has to tag along to everthing and it does limit activities I can do with the 3 of them.

You have to do what is right for you. There is no right or wrong answer.

I'm probably the minority here but I am JUST starting to warm up to the idea and DS turned 2 exactly 2 months ago. I am 35 so we will likely start trying end of summer or early fall. I have and continue to enjoy my one on one time with DS, it's something I didn't want to compromise by having another DC close in age.

I feel like we just got our life back- sleeping and such. I personally, like having disposable income and factor that into the timing question.

we started trying when DS was 1.5 and we conceived just a few days after he turned 2. Our kids are almost 33 months apart and I love the age gap.

Originally I wanted them to be closer to two years apart but honestly, 3 years is perfect IMO!

If we have #2 we wouldn't start trying until DD is almost 3.

When to try for DC #2

For us, age and fertility were a factor so we started trying as soon as I stopped BFing and started ovulating again. We didn't really plan how far apart they would be, we were happy just to get pregnant again. Our sons will be 2.5 years apart, and although I might have liked for DS#1 to be a little older, I know when they are both older I will appreciate them being closer in age. 2 in daycare is going to be rough though!!

We started trying for #2 just after our son turned 2. It happened pretty quickly and they are a little over a month shy of 3 years apart. I like this age gap, but it is hard for them to participate in the same things right now (he's 5.5, she's 2.5), so I always feel like my older one gets shafted sometimes. But, he loves his sister and doesn't seem to mind.

Re: When to try for DC #2

I think every situation is different. I went through IF treatments to have DS. We went back to the RE to TTC #2 when my DS turned 1 year... but then after a few failed cycles I decided to wait until he turned 2 to try again. The more I thought about it, the more it would have been too much for me (emotionally and financially) to have them closer in age. I am thinking that I can handle a 3 year age gap more. Hopefully the next time around it won't take us very long to conceive.

We started trying when Dd turned 2, and got pregnant right away. So they will be about 33 months apart. I didn't want to try sooner than this bc I wanted to fully give DD my attention for the first 2 years. And now she is more independent and excited to be my "helper" when her brother is born.

Re: When to try for DC #2

I wanted a 2-3 year age gap, and got pregnant first try with my DS, so we waited until we were prepared for that to happen again with #2. DS did not STTN for a long time and I am a FTWM with a demanding job, and was scared to death of 2 under 2. We tried one cycle without OPKs, skipped a cycle, and then started using OPKs. I conceived our second cycle with OPKs but lost that pregnancy, and then proceeded to get pregnant and miscarry two more times. I did not expect this to happen AT ALL as everything was perfect and easy with my first pregnancy. I do wish we had started trying a little earlier, but not much as we could have gotten pregnant right away again. It's tough because you never really know what is going to happen Chat Icon

We had hoped to have them be between 2 and 3 years apart but that's no longer a possibility. I'm trying not to lose sleep over it. Maybe between 3-4. We'll see.

I think I always pictured myself being a 2 under 2 mom. DD is almost 2 and we've only been trying for a few months now (mostly bc I didn't have AF while I was nursing). Part of me thinks that it will be great to have DD be older, more independent, and more able to understand the excitement of a sibling. I'm also glad to have time with just her since she is still so little and I'm in no rush to have my baby years come to an end. On the other hand, I only have so long to be a SAHM so having children more spread out is a strain in that way. It also makes me nervous that if we want three kids, at this rate I'll be approaching 40 by the time we have a third.

Re: When to try for DC #2

i have to say, i am very grateful that my 2nd was an "oops" Chat Icon

i got pregnant 6months pp without ever getting my period bc of breast feeding.
DH and i "planned" on having them about 2-3 years apart. not sure why, it just sounded good to us. we have had people tell us wait 4-5 years so that the older can help with the younger and so that you dont have two in college at the same time. and we have had others telling us not to wait.
im glad it wasnt a decision we had to make bc i dont know if there would have ever been the "right" time
now that my LOs will be 15 months apart - am i stressed just thinking about it...absolutely! but i am glad that it happened this way. they will be close in age which means hopefully they will have a close relationship. i never had to pack up my maternity clothing, or DDs toys and stuff...they are staying out for #2 to arrive and everything is in good shape. the "baby" phase will be done. my concern if i waited 3-4 years was that i would be happy to sttn, and happy to have a routine with dd (taking her to weekend classes etc) and not have diaper changes that i wouldn't want to go back to that and i would end up only having one child. but at the same time, i feel bad for #2 bc they will never have my undivided attention like DD did bc dd is still so little and needs so much.

there are pros and cons to waiting and to having 2 under 2

Re: When to try for DC #2

we def considered finances... we wanted the least time with both kids in day care/preschool. i always knew i would love being a mom, but that i would need some time between children & after having my first, it was very true

my 2nd is due in a month & my son will be 3 1/2 years old & i think its the perfect time frame in between without being too far apart!

Re: When to try for DC #2

we didnt want them back to back. I was probably ready to have #2 when DS1 was 18m. Took alittle longer for DH to feel that way. We agreed when he was 2.5yo and got pregnant quickly so they are 3y3m apart and I really love the age gap. I dont think finances really played a part. I was a SAHM beginning when DS1 was 16m old.

WE wanted to just enjoy the early stages iwth just one child, not feeling like we were always divided in attention. we loved taking DS1 on vacations and to events we loved those memories with just one child. Everything is harder with more than one...not impossible, but harder.

If we could even get pregnant again Chat Icon and day care costs were not an issue, we would be trying now for number 2. As you know DS is going to be 1 in 2 days Chat Icon

yes for us, money is a factor and I cannot imagine paying for 2 in daycare. So, if we were to try for another it wont be until next yr when DD turns 4.
