when to stop using highchair?

ds is 18 m old and we still use a highchair. we haven't gotten a booster seat for kitchen chair yet because ....well hes a hot mess. a lot of his food is on his tray smooshed around and he has not even close to mastered utensils yet
but at daycare they said he sits in a kids chair on his own for snacks so...what would you or did you do to make the transition and when? thank you!

We switched at probably 15 mons or so. Ds started sitting in a chair for his meals at daycare at 12 mons and he started to hate the high chair.

We were forced into the transition. He just refused to go in it one day. I say let him stay bc clean up is so much easier. Although I have the green sprouts silicone table mat which is awesome and helps a lot b

DD will be two next month and we still use a high chair for her. She totally sits in regular chairs at preschool type programs/library etc for snack but its just easier for us to keep her in a highchair for meals at home and she doenst mind it- so I say if it aint broke... She likes to feed herself and so the mess is better contained on the highchair. We have one of those space saver highchairs that convert to booster seats.. the only diff I can see is the tray.. once you remove the tray its a booster seat.

I have no plans to stop using it for my 18 month old any time soon. Snacks are one thing, I don't usually give anything messy so I don't put her in the chair for that. She's not great with a fork or spoon but I'm trying to let her do it herself more. I'd rather keep her in there so that I have less of a heart attack when she turns her plate over or makes her sippy cup "hop, hop, hop" and gets milk everywhere!

Re: when to stop using highchair?

We stopped DD at 3 only because DS needed it. I really wish I could have kept going... we have her in a booster now at the table and it's so irritating how much freedom she has in it. Chat Icon

DS turned 2 in sept & we are still using his highchair simply because it is literally the only containment we have left! (No more crib, pack &play, etc) Easier clean up for meals but more importantly, if I need a few mins to shower or check laundry when hes done that's the only time I know he's out of trouble! (Disclaimer: Obviously I dont leave him when he has food & i have a video monitor on him)

DS was about 16/17 months. I just got sick of the high chair and I enjoy having him at the table with us.

DS 1 moved around 21 months into the Healthy Care Booster seat - he was giving us a hard time with it so we just moved him.

DS 2 moved around 15 months. He gave us a hard time in the high chair so we figured we would just move him.

We moved him to a booster at the table at 17 months when he started to climb out of his highchair.

Re: when to stop using highchair?

DS is 2 and still uses it. Mostly for breakfast and dinner he asks to go in there and has no problem sitting at the table on a regular chair too. He just likes his chair. At school or when we go out to eat he doesn't use a highchair.

when to stop using highchair?

DD is 2 and uses it at home and at restaurants.

Any other places she goes nuts if you try to put her in a highchair!

Re: when to stop using highchair?

Used it until DS turned 4 and started refusing. Having him in there was the best thing ever bc he couldn't get up and roam. He's a great eater so it was never about mealtimes being difficult but the problem now is that he always wants to get up to get something, see something, etc. I was more than happy to keep him in there as long as possible.

Re: when to stop using highchair?

we used the highchair until ds was almost 2.5, he finally leanred how to get out of it on his own so we then switched to a regular kitchen chair (he is kind tall)

If dd would still sit in the high chair without a battle I'd still be using it. Use it or as long as he'll cooperate. No need to transition to a booster, much easier to contain the mess in a high chair.

Between all three of mine the range when we stopped using a highchair was from 18 mos to just shy of 2.5.

DS is 28 months and he's still in his high chair. We've always had the space saver highchair so he's always been "at the table" with us so to speak.

Re: when to stop using highchair?

We switched when DS could climb up into his chair on his own. We never used a booster. DS was 13 months. We have a bar height table so him sitting in a short highchair didn't work well.

when to stop using highchair?

I switched dd when she was 13 months. I was due with ds 3 months later, but dd only wanted to sit in her minnie mouse booster at the table anyway.

Re: when to stop using highchair?

DS will be 3 in a week and he still uses it. Not for breakfast anymore but for lunch and dinner. And definitely when we go out to eat. Otherwise he'd be out of the chair more often then he was in it.
