When house hunting......
Were any of you ever against a certain type of house. For example ranches, capes, colonials. Did you end up buying one because of other amenities the home had or just because of location or sd?

Re: When house hunting......
I would not look at capes unles it had 3 bedrooms on the 2nd floor.
I also was against ranches. I have a thing about everyone sleeping upstairs.
That said our first house was a colonial and so is our second. But we did look at a ranch this time around that I really loved. The colonial just worked out better.

Re: When house hunting......
I didnt limit myself to the style of house...I basically was looking for a min # of bedrooms & bathrooms...I was more concerned with the location and that the home had updated baths & kitchen with a basement and garage.

Re: When house hunting......
I didnt want to look at capes. I lived in one as a child and I just didn't like how the bedrooms upstairs had the lower ceilings but, our REA actually showed us a couple that were done over and they looked completely different, one we actually considered buying. I really wanted a ranch but we looked at all styles and ended up with a high ranch because it was the best fit for us. If I didn't look inside though, as just by a picture of the outside, it wouldn't have been my first pick. Our REA told us to look at all options and it was the best advice she could have given us because something might just click

Re: When house hunting......
I didn't want a split level house... I grew up in one and I thought it was too small and I wanted a different layout.
Once we started looking, I realized there are SO many different models and sizes of splits. We eventually bought a split (which is also a corner house, which DH was dead set against). It had almost everything we wanted -- a lot of pluses we didn't think we'd be able to get (such as a master bath, central air, a fireplace, etc.).
I am glad I was open minded enough to look at the house (our realtor had suggested it). And now that I am in real estate, I always encourage my customers to be open minded about styles of homes (unless they have an absolute unshakeable reason for preferring one -- such as a person needing a one floor ranch for medical reasons).

Re: When house hunting......
Our 1st home was a ranch and not a fan of simply because I prefer sleeping on an upper level. And contemporary style isn't for us...

Re: When house hunting......
We are waiting to close on our house now - its a colonial and I'm very happy with it. I would not look at high-ranches - I did not want all the stairs every time you wanted to get into the backyard (even if there was a deck off the upper level, it would mean having to go down the deck stairs to get to teh actual yard. If there was no deck, you'd have to go down the stairs and through the rooms downstairs to get outside) - not for me.

Re: When house hunting......
I absolutely wanted a split. I grew up in a split and just felt comfortable in them. I didn't want a cape b/c I didn't like the idea of having bedrooms on different floors. We ended up getting a ranch and I love it!

Love Craftsman, tudors, and Victorians...
Don't like post-war styles like american colonial, capes, split level and ranchess.
My home is a Victorian Colonial and I like it fine 'cus it's well built, has character and high ceilings.

Split levels. I didn't like the separation of the two spaces and felt we'd never use the bottom half.

Re: When house hunting......
I'm open to looking at everything, but I really never see myself living in a high ranch. I dont like all the steps with small kids and the split levels with company. We'll see where we actually end up though.

We did not want any capes or ranches, just not a fan of either layout especially since so many of them have cave-like basements.

Re: When house hunting......
I wanted a Center Hall Colonial or a Wideline High Ranch....we actually put bids on both styles, but neither one worked out! We ended up buying a ranch because of location AND school district! We've done lots to the house and now 3 years later - I love my ranch! Now with a 4 mo DD, I kinda wish her room wasn't so close to the kitchen & living room - but the bright side will be that she will learn to sleep through noise :) Good Luck!

Re: When house hunting......
We didn't look at capes. I grew up at one and just don't like the layout. Everything else we were open to with school district, location and yard space being most important. We did look at a couple of splanches and I hated that layout so next time (if there is one) we will probably not bother with those.

I also prefer pre-war houses, preferably built before 1929. I like craftsmans, victorians and dutch colonials.

I didn't look at Capes. I just don't like the layout of them. Other than that I was open to all other styles.

Same here - we didn't see any capes. And although we didn't prefer high ranches or splits, we saw them anyway.

Re: When house hunting......
DH and I both did not want a ranch. I grew up in homes that were always on one level (not counting the basement) and I demanded some stairs in my house
We ended up falling in love with a split. We loved the layout and still do!
