Re: When do the little ones start seeing a dentist?

DD went right before she turned 2, I think around 22 months. We go every 6 months and also brush her teeth at least twice a day. She used to HATE getting her teeth brushed (like screaming bloody murder hate), but it was a non-negotiable for me. Sometimes it took me and DH both holding her down to brush them but it always got done. I bought her a spinning character toothbrush at Target for 5 bucks and now she usually doesn't fight it at all. To me, it's really important to have healthy teeth and gums because so many issues can arise. DD also has a lot of allergies, one being dairy, so I worry about lack of calcium and the effect on her teeth. But, so far so good!

When do the little ones start seeing a dentist?

We started at 3.5 on my dentist's recommendation. I also take him to my dentist and never did a pediatric dentist and he's great with it.

Officially 5.

We tried at 3 and 4 at our dentist, and DS was terrified both times. We ended up taking him to a pediatric dentist and it was the best decision we have ever made.

When do the little ones start seeing a dentist?

As soon as they had just about their full set of baby teeth...so around 2?

I don't know why people think it's weird to take them so young. If they have teeth, eat regular food, should be brushing 2x a day...why shouldn't they get checked out?

I don't think it's weird to take them once they have teeth.
What I think is weird is a dentist telling you to start at 1. My DD had ZERO teeth at one. But I am sure if I brought here they would have gladly cleaned her gums and charged my insurance company for a visit.

1 seems a little young to me, too. That's what my dentist told me and I just don't know. I guess it's just to get her comfortable with going? She's so little though! She's 10.5 months and now has 4 teeth. I might wait until she's got a few more.

DD went at around 1.5 years old. I think it was more to just get her comfy with the idea of a dentist. They checked to make sure that all her teeth were growing in at the rate they should be, did a quick cleaning, and a fluoride treatment. I'm happy we did it -- she met the dentist and now knows her by name. In the morning and night when she brushes we always talk about "Dr. Jeanie" and how she'll be very happy the next time we visit her because DD's been taking such great care of her teeth.

my son went at 2.5. we take him to the same dentist that DH and i go to. so his first visit was right after ours-- he basically laid on top of DH in the dentist chair while she checked his teeth. it was basically just to get him comfy with the idea of somebody looking in his mouth, etc. i think she just counted his teeth and maybe polished them a little bit. it went well because he felt comfortable since he was laying with DH. he's 6 now and we go every 6 months- and he's really good with the whole thing-- even though its not a "pediatric" dentist that we take him to.

My dentist told me not to bother until he's three. And he was honest and said all they do is count the teeth. So we went at 3 and plan to go once year.
