When did Cops start driving Hummers?
Driving home today on the LIE we saw a cop sitting between the east bound and west bound lanes. He was in full uniform, watching for singles in the HOV lane.
The weird part was that he was sitting in a custom color Hummer. When did they go from Crown Vic's to Hummers?

I'm disgusted seeing alll these new cars for cops and government employees.
Only on LI where the taxes are out of control can they comfortably fill those Hummer gas tanks at $3+ a gallon.

Re: When did Cops start driving Hummers?
I've seen them in all different cars. Camaros, Hummers, and all different sedans. I believe the idea is to fool the drivers into thinking it's just a car on the side of the road. Although, I understand the gas guzzler factor - I think it's good that they are making an effort to blend in with other cars in order to catch the "bad guys".

that is a sin, whatever officials said yes to that should be kicked out of their offices today. People that buy hummers should have to pay a $10,000 luxury(greedy, selfish pig tax) that will go toward buying new limbs for our soldiers that are losing theirs in real hummers everyday in Iraq. The cop in that hummer probably has a penis the size of a gherkin pickle.

Re: When did Cops start driving Hummers?
Cops get all sorts of "unmarked" cars (you prob. didn't even notice as they are unmarked) Usually they are not in uniform driving them either.
They get them from auction etc. prob. not a deal w/ GM.
Suffolk got a ton of marked explorers a few years ago & a lot of private townships drive SUV's as well as most fire chiefs.
Nassau has Camaros, Impalas & are getting a few other types as well.
ETA: the cops don't really have a say what car they drive. This cop was prob. just put on a special duty in it. I don't think he has a "little gherkin" for being told what to do.

I agree!
and what POSSIBLE purpose does it serve? not much off roading going on near the LIE, or anywhere on LI for that matter

The purpose is for them to blend in with other cars on the LIE - and as someone else said they are usually gotten off auction or unclaimed stolen property.

I can understand the idea of having a couple of fast cars, although I think high speed chases are asinine, but cops that are sitting in between those cement medians are rarely the same ones that pull out to pull you over, they usually have a trap set up. So at least half of the cops could be driving hybrids. The revenue from the confiscated luxury cars they sell could purchase a whole fleet of fuel efficient cop cars.

Re: When did Cops start driving Hummers?
There are actually many state and federal agencies that are requiriing hybrid or other fuel-efficient vehicles to be purchased. As the older models start to break down and they look to replace them, many must by law replace them with CNG vehicles or Hybrids.
As for police cars, many are purchased with money seized from drug raids, etc. and while I've never seen a hummer there are certain vehicles that are used for emergency operations and special detail - such as terror warnings or hazardous materials. In certain cases and in certain places they need cars that can withstand certain dangers.

I just think it is INCREDIBLY wasteful for a cop on LI to drive something on the LIE all day that gets 8 MPG

Yes, they get lots of cars. Highway Patrol had a Camaro at one point too. I think they are good for both undercover and to go where other cars cannot!

That's it, let's insult the PO who was in the car that has NO decision making in this process at all and is just doing his job...ooh by the way, he is in danger too and him andhis collegues lose limbs and life as well
ETA- Many times undercover cop cars are not even bought, they are from siezed illegal actions.

I agree that a Hummer isn't a sensible choice for police work. BUT your comment in regards to the police officer—what an idiotic thing to say! That cop is putting his/her life in danger every time he/she starts his/her shift. It's not the cop who decides what vehicles the county will use. I'm truly disgusted by your ignorance and disrespect.

what she said..
had to edit, it's not the cops choice of car..it's the department or county. But I agree that it's a waste.

ITA.
Regardless if you agree with the choice or not, it's pretty rude to say especially since you don't know the officer or his family --- and especially since there are so many wives of P.O. on this site. Even P.O. themselves on this site.
Happy 4th of July!!!!!
