what's your feeling on houses with pools?

I just feel like they are so much money to maintain properly, and then it also takes away from your yard.. Although I can see the advantages of having them. But in the NY climate, they seem kinda pointless for 4 months at best of use...

There are a couple of houses in the area we want that look nice, but they have pools. I just always thought it was best to stay away.

I def. don't want a pool. my parents have a huge inground, It's so much work with very little pay off, we barely use it! It's either too chilly, raining, cloudy, or we just have other things to do. they open it up around memorial day, but the water is cold so we wait. then it's closed back up in september, looks so depressing once it's closed. It really is a lot of work, the electric goes up bc of the pump, and to me it's a danger bc I have small children. I would rather join a pool club, or go to the beach.

ETS: if we were in a warm climate I would probably change my mind but for 4 months out of the year, not worth it IMO

I have an igp with spillover hot tub. We only looked at houses with pools and lots big enough to put one in. We literally use it every single day that its open, unless its raining.

I love it!

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

When we were looking for houses it was on my "must have" list. I have a pool company do the opening, closing, and weekly cleaning/maintenance. I never have to do anything to it.

I agree... in NY the season is a bit short but once we get it heated we'll be able to swim for about 6 months out of the year instead of 4.

Last summer we used it just about everyday. Getting some sun, doing laps to work out or skinny dipping at night lol.

The family comes over for parties / bbq's and they love it ... I think it's a nice thing to have.

I like them, if they don't take up your whole yard. My parents have a small octagon shaped 4ft deep inground in their yard and it's great! serves its purpose without being overbearing

eta: they have a solar heater - they can go in it as soon as the pool is open basically - my dad also does all the maintenance himself so it barely costs him anything but to buy the supplies...

With a toddler, we absolutely did not want one.

yes- that's my other thought.

DH had a pool so he is not opposed to it... but, he also grew up in Old Westbury, had a sh!tload of land and IMO the pool wasn't maintained nicely at all. Headache from many aspects.

Was just wondering if I was being too uptight. Guess not!

we really were indifferent about it.. if it had one fine, if not no big deal. it just so happens that the house we are buying has one. i hope it will not be a PITA though to maintain!

I think they are great when they are someone elses house and I'm visiting!

We didn't want one - just another thing to maintain and not likely to get much use. But if I lived in a hot area like Arizona I'd reconsider. We had one growing up and it was nice to have.

We also didn't want a pool because of having a toddler, the increased insurance, and the cost of maintenance. It was on our must NOT have list. Our realtor said many people will not buy a house with a pool.

I wish my house had a pool, but unfortunately it was one of the few we looked at that did not. Of course, I also teach private swim lessons, so for me it would have been beneficial.

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

In a couple of years DH and I want to put in an inground pool. I grew up with one and we used it ALL the time. It was def one of my favorite things growing up. We had tons of parties and people loved going in it. We have a Chat Icon due in July and I would love to be able to have pool parties for him later in life.

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

i did not grw up with a pool but i feel the same way you do.
i feel there will be a lot of maintenance and most importantly the danger factor of having a toddler around.

that would mean you would have to put up a fence around it for extra security.

i look for houses without pools..

We want one. I will worry about DD but it won't stop me. I will just have as many precautions in place as possible.

I like them, but I chose not to see any homes with them

too much work for me, lol

the house I hopefully will be in contract with soon, it has a gazebo with a jacuzzi in it, and even that is giving me a headache already!!

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

I think it is a peronal choice. For us,we were absolutely looking for houses with no pool. I was very anxious about having toddlers with one plus I did not want to maintain one.

Unfortunately in the area we were looking, Dix Hills most houses did have a pool without a fence around, so right off the bat that would have been the first thing done... For us it worked out-- We found a house with an acre of land with no pool..

We have plenty of room to have one plus a tennis court but we are opting not to...

Again, personal choice...

we decided when looking if the house had one. we would remove it. Safety, cost were the big reasons. DH mopm has a pool, and in 12 yrs we're together we were in it 2x. So, it's not really our thing.

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

We ruled out ALL houses with pools. It had nothing to do with money or maintenance rather EVERYTHING to do with liability. DH and I don't like swimming enough to take the chances that someone could get hurt or drown on our property. Not worth any risk if you ask me.

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

We did look at one house with a pool, but there were just too many negatives

~ time & money to maintain
~ insurance & liability issues
~ short period of usage

And now with a toddler, absolutely no way would I look at a house with a pool.

Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?

I had hoped to not have a pool but to have the room to add one later. The house we are buying does have a fenced in inground pool. We are also getting an alarm that floats just in case. My parents live right up the block so it really wasn't necessary b/c they have an igp. I'm not paying to fill it in though, I know I wanted one when the kids got older so I'd be paying to put it back which is silly. We'll just take every precaution and I asked my dad how to make the most out of it at the least cost. Open late, close it early. My dad sometimes doesn't open it until as late as July and closes it right after labor day.

I don't want one now, but would love one when the kids are older. I don't know if we will put one in though, they are not usually good for resale.
