I grew up in East northport (elwood sd not northport) and its fine. Right near huntington which was always nice. I then moved to West islip when i got married. Now im back in east northport and can't wait to move back to west islip.
This def didnt help you did it lol

Babylon....I love, love, love that town.
Proximity to train, city, parkways.
Cute village to shop and eat in.
Close to the ocean.
Great School District.
High Taxes...

i am definitely a north shore girl. my top picks are oyster bay, cold spring harbor, huntington, centerport, northport, miller place, stony brook, setauket and port jeffesron.

Long Island:
I'm partial to the south shore: Sayville and Babylon (this is my favorite personally) - I like their villages and that Babylon is close to Robert Moses and to the Fire Island Ferries. Atlantic Beach (right by Long Beach) is on my list too.
Both Sayville and Babylon are my favorite towns too.

Sayville.
I live here and I love it and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Love being close to the ferries and we have such a pristine little bay beach here. The main street is thriving and alive and the community is tight knit and friendly.

I'm not a native LI'er, but I do have my faves.
If I could live in anytown on LI, it would be Port Washington, Oyster Bay, and the mother of them all...Manhasset. I just think they are beautiful towns, with great neighborhoods...and not to far from where DH would work...so thats why I like those.

My favorite towns:
Sayville
Holbrook
most of the North Shore from Smithtown east to about Rocky Point (Setauket is awesome)
I wouldn't recommend living where I live (Bellport). It's either extremely expensive in the Village or terrible outside of it. There's only a small part north of both areas that is middle class.
