What would you have done in this situation??
I went to get gas yesterday, filled it up, used a credit card. The guy comes to my window, says $32, I hand him the card, he goes inside to run it. While he is in there, I backed up a bit to look at the pump, sun glare was blocking it previously, and it says $31.99. Guy comes out with credit slip saying $32. What would you have done, said heck with the penny and left or made him pump a penny, or give you a penny back?
Now I know its only a penny, but with prices the way they are, I kinda felt why should I let these mega rich gas companies get away with my penny. I just left, but the more I thought about it, the more it bugged me. Same thing happened to my FIL last week, except they told him $43 and they only pumped $42.20, he told them to get back to pumping if they wanted the $43.

I have the Mobil Speedpass, so the exact amount always goes on my credit card. I don't deal w/anyone inside.

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
I wouldnt care about the penny but I agree with your prinicpal. For every person he does that to, the gas station makes out. Ive had situations where they have overpumped what I asked and then asked me for the addtl money and I am like "r u kidding me". i mean watch your job and listen to what I tell you. I think this is something purposely done because Ive seen it done time and time again.

I would of been upset too.
I forgot that there are even people to pump gas for you. Down here in NC you pump your own gas.

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
Honestly I would have said something. In the city a lot of stores, their totals are always 3.54, 7.49, blah blah .. and sooo many people walk away without taking the penny, yet if your bill is 3.51 or 7.56 they tap their foot until you give them the penny, so now I wait for my change and say something if they don't give it to me.

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
I probably would say jokingly 'You owe me a penny." only because if the idea of someone thinking they're getting over on me irks me.
If it happened again, I would be on the company website writing a nasty email to customer service - and contacting some consumer agencies. But I'm more of a b^tch than most people.

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
I had this done to me, I asked for 10, I never look but something said to look, the guy comes to my window and says 10 dollars and I saw he only pumped 9.25, so I say I asked for 10 he goes oh well I set it for 10 and thats all it pumped, so I said well thats NOT 10 so he goes well I dont have the change so I gave him the 10 and left MAD!!! I never went back to exxon again!
My advice ALWAYS look at the pump if you do full serve and def say something. Even if you dont want the penny, its the principal, makes me think how many people are these gas attendants ripping off!

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
I probably would have just left but it would have p!ssed me off too! I don't get the reaction of "a penny is just a penny". If he does that to 100 people every day of the week, he is making $365 extra dollars! Not just a penny, right? It is not the oil company/gas compay, corporate, etc. doing it. It is the guy who rings you up and IMO that is STEALING! It is like a waiter raising the tip you put on a CC statement (I had to fire a waitress at my restaurant that was caught doing it). Just a few cents here and there REALLY add up in the end!

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
I wouldn't have said anything, but I also would not return.
Once, I went to this Exxon. I was 17 years old (10 years ago) driving a 1991 Honda Accord.
I said "$10 regular" Now, that should have put 3/4 of a tank worth of gas.
I wasn't paying any attention. All of a sudden, the guy comes to take my $10. I turn on the car and the needle barely passed the 1/4 line.
I was PIZZED!!!! So, I boycotted them for 2 years.
Low and behold, I go back 2 years later and they scr*wed me AGAIN!!!

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
Last month I went into the station that I always used. I asked for $15 and I was at an angel that I couldn't see the pump. Well I paid and left and the gage did not move one bit! I was livid. I picked up my daughter from daycare and on the way back to the station I went back there and DEMAND that he repump the '$15' I was supposed to get. Needless to say they lost a customer that has been faithful to them for over a year and a half.

Re: What would you have done in this situation??
If you are using full serve, make sure your car is turned so u can see the gas gauge go up as its pumped...
My Aunt and Uncle got gas pumped for them in Riverhead and forgot to pu the key to a spot where they could see the gas gauge, and when they got on the road, noticed it had not moved, but they paid 25.00. My Aunt was LIVID and called RIverhead police who told her to contact weight and measures and they would investigate. BUT, the police also said it is not the first complaint they had gotten about that specific gas station.

I agree with this. And like the other posters said, if they do this to every customer, they end up making alot of money for product that they are not providing. I too always take my change regardless of how little it is. Better in my pocket than theirs.
When I do go to the occasional place that rounds off the 3.51 to 3.50, I still give them the extra penny. I figure I can't have it both ways. At least that way, I feel I am being fair.
