What type of GPS do you use?

What type of GPS do you use? My truck has the ability to have the in-dash GPS, but it's like $500 for the dealer to activate it.... uh... no thanks... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I prefer using my phone. I use Google Maps, Waze, a totally off-line GPS system, and a trucking GPS for when I tow a trailer, and can't go on any parkways.

DW likes using her portable dedicated GPS device.

Re: What type of GPS do you use?

Our car has built in Nav, but I refuse to pay the fee for real time traffic.
We use our phones, Google Maps we find to be the best. Waze does some weird stuff in Queens.

Waze is getting better, but for the longest time, whenever I would enter in a park that I was going camping at, it would find the park, but only the geographic center of the park, not the entrance. For Sears Bellows, on the south fork, it would send me to the side of Sunrise Highway! Chat Icon

I've learned to double-check where it's trying to send me before I follow it blindly.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What type of GPS do you use?

We have in dash navs, but after we used it getting around DC and getting us friggen lost, we only use google maps.

I don’t understand why a car company hasn’t made a deal with google to use google maps in their dash.

Subaru has something called Android Auto ( and Apple Carplay).
when you sync your phone with that, instead of Bluetooth, the in dash display is your phone screen. It works for music, calls and also maps.

If you are using an iPhone though, you have to use apple maps. If you are using android, you have to use Google maps ( or Waze, I think)

I don't think it even has it's own built in GPS-we have never actually had one b/c our old car predated that.

We do have an old dedicated GPS- the maps may be a but outdated for certain areas, but it is good in ares with poor cell phone reception.

I have a Subaru I had no idea it had that Android auto. Is it something extra you had to pay for?

I think it was new for 2018 on the Crosstrek & it was standard.
it is only in some models, I think, but coming to others.

Re: What type of GPS do you use?

Google maps. However, I have found it to be too sensitive lately. It gets stuck on certain “spots” and tells me to go another way, then changes back after a few seconds. So, for example, if I’m driving in certain places where I know where I am and have to stay on this road for about 9 kilometers (there is a ring road in Munich), she will say exit and take another road. I know not to follow her at this point because I know it’s just the GPS points getting messed up.

I just yell at her, lol. She has a British accent (the British accent does better German pronunciation than the American for some reason), so I feel kind of mean when I yell at her, lol. But I need English directions but with proper German pronunciation for the streets.

Google maps on my phone - I have one of those products that I stick in the air conditioning vent that holds my phone so I can see it well but it's not obstructing my view of the windshield.

On Android, it's Smart Truck Route 2

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teletype.smarttruckroute4

There's a monthly fee, but if you only need it occasionally, (I use it once a month), you can map a route for free from between 1:00 and 2:00, both AM and PM. Weird restriction, but I just map the route on Thursday, then use it on Friday. I map the return trip on Saturday and use it on Sunday.

It avoids all parkways and restricted areas. You can change the settings to match your vehicle. Height, weight, etc.

It works pretty good. If you have to avoid parkways, it's amazingly better than Google Maps.
