What turns you off?
My mother made me hate floor-to-cieling dark wood paneling forever. When I see it in houses, especially in dark rooms, it immediately turns me off.
I try to keep an open mind, I know I can just rip it down if needed. It's just a psychological thing.
And basements. I know, I'm strange. I'm probably the only person on Long Island that could care less about them. I just think cold & mold when I think of basements for some reason. I think it's a product of growing up in a house & neighborhood that didn't have any.

Im with ya on that! I had no desire to have one. They always freak me out... I usually wind up running up the stairs REALLY fast. Kinda like Vada in My girl

I don't care about basements either- I grew up in a house that didn't have one, and most of my friends didn't have one. Never knew it was such a weird thing till I was in college. I no longer live on LI, but our current house only has a crawl basement, which is really useless to us.
Turn offs- I wouldn't want a house on a busy road. That would make me nervous.

Re: What turns you off?
wallpaper, paneling, 70s carpet. Not to say I wouldn't buy a house with one or more of these things, but when I look on MLSLI, I am totally turned off.

Re: What turns you off?
Wallpaper in ever room (I've scrapped wallpaper in 3 separate houses, yes, the entire house for each house )
Popcorn ceilings
Tiny rooms
Extensions/layouts that don't make sense
Bathrooms w/o windows
unattached garages
houses too close to the road
houses on busy streets
wall to wall carpet and no hardwood floors underneath
Pretty much anythig that I can't change (structural) or things that are a real PITA to change myself.
Funny, I never liked my Dad's house because of the layout and due to an extension none of the bathrooms have windows

Popcorn ceilings
Is there anything worse than trying to repaint a popcorn ceiling?

Houses on busy roads
Dark rooms/not enough windows/wood paneling
I'm a fan of basements so I really want one for the storage space
garages that are not attached

Re: What turns you off?
not having a garage we have a basement, but I don't like it. I grew up "on a slab" & I think basements are creepy, my DH loves our basement though. McMansions Vinyl siding cookie cutter neighborhoods houses that were totally renovated

I adjusted her list, but it's pretty much the same as mine. I'm also turned off by layers of linoleum!

Re: What turns you off?
Things that can't be changed:
*treeless lots/properties (tiny ornamental trees do not count)
*houses w/o a basement and garage (storage, storage, storage!)
*sidewalks (I prefer older, established neighborhoods)
Things that can be changed:
*door/window trim corner blocks
*light colored wood floors (the golden oak color in particular)
*semigloss or highgloss paint finishes on walls in any room (unless you're an interior decorator and know what you're doing)
(this list could go on and on! )

Re: What turns you off?
tiny rooms too many different colors going on (every room a different color with nothing to tie them together) one color that is a little too central (everything is peach - from counters to cabinets to wall color) vinyl floors mismatched floors wall mirrors extremely modern style mismatched appliances
ETA: While looking for a house, we were also turned off by irregular shaped yards (hard to fence), basements with low ceilings, excessive wallpaper, unfinished additions, funny smells (haha!)

Re: What turns you off?
OMG! where do I start??!
MOLD & FILTH! I HATE going to see a house that is dirty! outdated decor (like foil wallpaper which takes 50 years to remove. small houses, only 1 bathroom, no storage, linolium (although that isn't a big deal to replace), ugly bathrooms, ugly kitchens, house on a busy street or near the LIRR tracks.

Re: What turns you off?
- Vinyl siding and vinyl fences - Awkward layouts - Houses on a hill - Houses where the pitch is towards the house (flooding!!) - Busy roads - Corner property
I dislike paneling and wallpaper (and have both in my house!!) but I can look past it b/c it can be removed (however painful it may be at times ).

*sidewalks (I prefer older, established neighborhoods)
Older neighborhoods don't have sidewalks? How old are you talking? My parents house was builty in the 30s & has sidewalks, but I've seen brand new developments that don't.
I like the look of no sidewwalks, but the practicality of sidewalks.

Re: What turns you off?
popcorn ceilings- just removed ours and what a difference! old and stained carpet only one bath small, enclosed kitchens- I am used the open floor plan now no backyard- HUGE problem near the beach in LA where I live- our backyard isn't huge but at least we have one no garage- we don't have basements in LA due to earthquakes- they make the buildings too unstable.
