Albany turns down

funding for the "new" Jets Stadium.

At this point it looks like NY will not be hosting the Olympics after all

bloomberg and pataki hyped nyc2012 so much beyond the truth just to get that stadium. The olympic committee always said that ny was not a top runner. Also no place that has ever won an olympic bid has done so by first building a stadium. All building goes on after the host city is chosen.

IMO that money that they wanted should go STRAIGHT into the NYC schools...

THEIR TEACHERS are seriously underpaid
as well as the over crowding in the classrooms
etc

Re: Albany turns down

The satadiunm was a purely financial project. I don't think it would have made a difference either way in whether or not NYC got the Olympics in 2012. AFTER a city gets picked, they start building stuff. I hope we do get it though. I would love to have the Olympics in NYC and it would give a much needed facelift for a lot of areas. If you go to Barcelona, for example, Olympic city was a slum prior to 1992 and it's now still thriving.

well at this point the only way we will get it is if they get private funding (which i hear Trump is looking into)
Other than that ....don't count on it

I might be one of the few but i rather the olympics be elsewhere, i couldnt think of a more perfect target for terrorist. think about it they will have years to plan the attack, know that thousands if not millions of people will be here for them, def something i would rather not have in ny.

I've been asking why it has to be on the taxpayers dime. If the stadium is wanted so badly, let's see some private investors step up to the plate. Mostly the ones to profit from the stadium

Re: Albany turns down

I also don't think it should be on the taxpayer's dime. Other cities have constructed privately funded stadiums that were very successful. If it is a money making proposition, I can't see private investors or corporations refusing to step up.

Also, it was said that the Republican convention was supposed to bring all this $ into the city's economy and all I kept hearing was how local businesses were inconvenienced by the security measures and how many of the business owners lost regular customers and $. Los Angeles was very much in the red after the Olympics and I don't think it would be different here. JMO.

Re: Albany turns down

i think it's too bad they didn't approve it. it will hurt the olympic bid, the ioc has already said the lack of approval for the funding is a strike against ny. we probably weren't going to get it anyway.

and from what i understand, that money will not be going anywhere, unless there's a proposal to borrow it for some other purpose and that gets approved. dh works in the city budget office and that's how he explained it to me. so denying the proposal didn't help anyone.

people are b*tching NOW that there's no money, but YET they were able to find $300 MILLION dollars to build this stadium!!!!!!???

Whatever! I say - before building ANYthing that costs $300 million to build, pay the firefighters, cops AND teachers what they should be paid!!! THEN worry about building a stadium, sports complex, event center, or whatever they want to call it! Chat Icon

I agree. I was VERY happy to hear that it was rejected. We have schools that are falling into themselves. We need that billion dollars for other causes other than a sports stadium that will sit empty 1/2 of the time.

they did not find $300 million, that money was going to be borrowed. the proposal and all the voting was to allow the state (or city i'm not sure) to BORROW the money.

Re: Albany turns down

I thought the Jets organization were supposed to pay for it themselves??? Anyways who really cares....

I really cannot believe the stupidity of our mayor and governor!!! There are a lot more worthy causes as to where 300 million should be spent and they want to spend it on a Stadium!!!!!!!! So instead of teachers, firefighters, and police, etc etc getting raises that they deserve the city wants another sports facility that charges you an arm and a leg for crappy food and snacks!!! We already have enough stadiums that do that...Is the mayor and governor seriously on crack!!!

Bloomberg will not get my vote for re-election. I thought he would be good for our city after 911 with his business sense. For a smart business man he sure is clueless when it comes to spending money the right way...
