what to you think of this-Updated

I'm so angry but I need to get the opinion of a larger audience..

My younger brother is home from college and lost his cell phone yesterday..He calls the phone and the azz tells him if he wants it back to meet him and bring $30. He wants it back, all his contacts ,etc, etc and hes going to get it. I didnt want him to go especially alone because I didnt trust this "good samaritan". I think if he was jerk enough to hold the phone ransom my brother could be going into a potentially dangerous situation..

Am I being a overprotective big sister?
Would you demand money ( I know it wasnt a lot)if you found something ?

I really need to know what others think

update-against everyones better judgement he went and got the phone. The loser met him at a store and asked him for the cash. My brother told him he only has $20 and the guy took that then told him where to find his phone hidden outside.

I'm so glad this was uneventful and he's home safe

I'm annoyed that he didnt think about his safety and just had to get his phone back .

He feels it may have been worse if he came with someone or the police especially since this low life seemed to have planned out this thing. He could have easily had others there with him or lied and denied everything.

Thanks all

Re: what to you think of this

Oh wow! That is really terrible of that person to demand money. Your brother needs to shut off service, just until he gets it back. If he does go and meet this person have it be in a very public place. This sound shady to me.

Re: what to you think of this

yea, def sounds shady, especially why the idiot wants $30. Why doesn't your brother calls the cops and have them meet him at the same place they are getting the phone.

why doesn't your brother just cancel the phone

heck - my phone service not only cancels the phone - but puts the VIN number on a list and alerts them if someone else tries to activate it

contacts can allways be re-input

You are NOT being overprotective. As you said, this guy is holding the phone for RANSOM. This doesn't sound like a good samaritan to me. I would be very concerned and would actually consider calling the cops. Are you sure this guy didn't steal the cell phone?

DH and I have both found people's cell phones. It never occurred to either one of us to ask for a fee in return. My mom even found someone's wallet and had to mail it back to the gentleman. She (of course) didn't ask for postage.

He should not go alone.. its dangerous.. especially this time of year. This guy is not a good person to charge your brother for finding his phone. Chat Icon

I hope your brother has someone go with him.

Re: what to you think of this

He should call the police and tell them the situation. The police will probably send a plain clothes officer with him. The guy demanding the phone will then be arrested.

Re: what to you think of this

This happened to me a few years ago. I lost my phone and needed all my contacts - I didn't have them written down anywhere! So I kept calling my phone and eventually a man answered. He told me that if I wanted it back, to meet him in Harlem, and to bring $20. I should have called the cops, but instead I drove out there with friends cracked the window open, gave him the $20 and he gave me the phone and we bounced. I was SOOOOOO mad that he made me pay him $20 to return my OWN phone AND I had to go out there to get it.

Your brother should NOT NOT NOT go alone.

Re: what to you think of this

Definately tell your brother not to go alone. I agree with everyone who said he should call the cops. If he won't do that, he should at the very least take someone with him & meet in a very public place.

I can't believe this sleaze bag is asking for $30. He doesn't sound trustworthy AT ALL. I would never charge a fee to return something that wasn't even mine to begin with!

Re: what to you think of this

I don't think you're being overprotective at all, I think you're the smart one!! Your brother def shouldn't go alone. I've never heard of someone asking for a reward if they found a lost cell phone, something def seems strange here.
