I don't know if your friend keeps Kosher, but if she does, I would opt for something from Ben's or another local Kosher deli. Although, I have to say that when my grandmother passed away, we got so tired of chicken and coldcuts that we were thrilled when my sister's MIL sent us kosher dairy for dinner (eggplant parm, baked ziti, etc.).

So sorry to hear about your friend's loss. Chat Icon

Depending on children, family situation - some times a good pizza one night is what you really need or chinese. That's better left co-ordinated so she knows its coming.

You don't HAVE to send something today. Even if you wait 1-2 weeks she will need dinner then too.

When we were sitting shiva for my mom, we really appreciated any hot food. People had sent tons of cookies, fruit platters, bagels, stuff like that. We appreciated all of it for sure, but at dinnertime, it was really nice to be able to heat up some baked ziti or something and actually sit down at the table and eat, to feel a little semblance of normalcy.

One friend sent us stuff from the Gray Turkey but I think that's closed now. You could try Ben's, Zorn's, or even swing by and pay a shiva call there yourself with some prepared foods from a supermarket.

Something from a kosher deli. Just a heads up-if they are religious, you want something Glatt Kosher. Some kosher delis are.

Re: What to send to a friend who is sitting shiva

As someone who lost both parents in a relatively short period of time sitting chiva for both of them, I recommend staying away from deli platters. Ifthe family has a lot of people paying respects, Bens will be the first place they run to and the food may go to waste. The Ben's van pulled up to my house every day for almost 7 days and we were up to our ears in pastrami. Ben's took pity upon us with the deli platters and switched it with chickens and hot food.

Fruit is always kosher.

Anything boxed and marked as kosher is good such as Entenmanns.

FISH platters with bagels from Bagel Boss are welcomed changes from deli meat and is always best served in the early part of the day during shiva. They can be rather costly.

Any gesture is always appreciated.
